RUOP seizes gold from smuggling ring in Luga

Two Caucasian men were detained March 15 for allegedly running a gold smuggling ring in the Leningrad Oblast town of Luga, a police spokesperson said.

Organized crime unit officers (RUOP) seized $11,500 (56 million roubles) worth of unprocessed gold originating from Turkey and Poland when they arrested the suspects.

Allegedly, the gold was processed in Luga, then sold with the help of two women also described by police as being of "eastern origin."

The bust was carried out by a joint effort of the tax police and RUOP, who believe they have ended a long-time contraband processing enterprise. (SPP)
