MANY HAPPY RETURNS ST PETERSBURG!
Last week saw the 292nd birthday of Russia's Venice of
the North. Proud Petersburgers marked the day with festivities including
concerts, trade fairs and parades. In 1703 Peter the Great laid the first stone
of the Peter and Paul Fortress to protect the mainland. The fortress, with its gleaming spire, has become the chief monument to the city's founder.
