ENGINEERS CASTLE/MIKHAILOVSKY CASTLE: Castle built by Paul I. Small exhibition rooms hold temporary exhibitions. No tours, labelling depends on exhibition. 10am-6pm; closed Tues. Admission depends on exhibition. 2 Sadovaya Ulitsa. M Gostiny Dvor, a 15-minute walk north along Sadovaya from Nevsky Pr., or take tram 2.

MUSEUM OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS: Closed to the general public, but for specialists or people with real interest, the exhibition will be opened if possible. Call to arrange T. 314-4034. 5 Isaac's Square. Trolley 22 or 5 north from Nevsky, to the other side of the cathedral.

MUSEUM OF THEATRICAL AND MUSICAL ARTS: Four rooms of photographs, theatre costumes, set designs, relating to theatre and musical performances. Personal archives of Stravinsky and others. PALACE MUSEUM OF A. MENSHIKOV: Immaculately restored home of the city's first governor-general; 12 rooms open to the public, including the kitchen.
