A Month of Events to Revive Jewish Traditions

by Melissa Witham

Curiosity about Jewish traditions is experiencing a rebirth in Russia, and leaders of the Jewish community in St Petersburg have planned a variety of different festivities and programs to help increase awareness of Jewish culture.

A lecture on March 9 will focus on the origin and meaning of Purim. Then on March 15, the Great Chorale Synagogue will sponsor a holiday festival featuring "Putim-shpeil," a short play adapted from the Bible about the historical events surrounding Purim, and a costume party for children.

All lectures start at 6:30pm and are held at the Mayakovsky Library at 46 Fontanka, in room 216. For more information about these and other events, call 311-51-25 or 113-62-09 (English or Russian speakers), or contact the Jewish Association of St Petersburg at 113-38-89 (Russian).
