Tamga Club rises artistically from TaMtAm roots

The director of the building that houses St Petersburg's oldest alternative venue has branched out by launching a new club oriented towards art and theater.

Alexander Kostrikin, director of the Vasileostrovsky Youth Center, said the new Tamga Club is not focused on music like its older co-resident the TaMtAm Club.

"The Youth Center unites different projects like the TaMtAm," he said. "I do not think that Seva [TaMtAm founder Vsevelod Gakkel] will be happy to learn that people link his brainchild to fashion shows.

"I did not intend the Tamga to be a juxtaposition to the TaMtAm.

"We have one or two bands performing on Sundays, but we do not try to discover new talents as the TaMtAm does -- we rather relax while listening to more well-known acts," Kostrikin added.

The Tamga Club organizes theater on Tuesdays and fashion shows on Wednesdays. There are plans to organize exhibition openings on Mondays.

The word "tamga" is an outdated 13th Century word of the Turkic origin, which means a "brand."

"We wanted to have the name starting with `tam' [`there']," Kostrikin said. (SPP)
