Forget those clowns: send in the seven little penguins

By Polly Jones

The drawcards in the Starlet Agency's latest St Petersburg spectacular are just 60 cm (2 feet) high and must be transported around town in a specially chilled car.

Between March 23 and March 29, human performers taking part in a special children's show at the Dom Kino will be put in the shade by seven small penguins.

The penguins have in fact been given their residence permit for Petersburg not to perform on Karavannaya Ulitsa, but to be the star attraction at the new circus near Avtovo, in the south of the city.

However while the big top remains under construction, its diminutive performers have momentarily defected to the center of town.

The show, which will feature clowns and jugglers, is a change also from the Starlet agency's usual repertoire of classical and folk music.

The show is a rare foray into children's entertainment and is the flipside of Starlet's celebrated Barbara Hendricks concert on Women's Day (March 8).

For the moment the seven penguins, when not on the move, spend their time relaxing in a secret location somewhere in the city.

However, the recent abundance of fine weather may well reveal their whereabouts.

It seems the small animals, specially brought in from the South Pole by an intrepid traveler, like nothing better than lolling about in the sun on their flat's balcony.
