St. Petersburg is alive with the auguries of the approach of Christmas. It is also the season of the annual International "Christmas Musical Meetings in the Northern Palmyra" Festival, running from December 23 to January 12.

As always it seems as if most of St Petersburg's expatriates are heading home for Christmas. For those who are not, both the city's five-star hotels are offering Christmas specials.

St Petersburg will host two Rock festivals featuring the
city's top bands next week. One is organized by the St Petersburg Rock Club,
the other by the Svobodnaya Kultura (Free Culture) Foundation, which owns the

The Victory Restaurant is a basement restaurant and bar set back from the road. A German--Russian joint venture, the owners seem to have aimed to produce the atmosphere of a smart international restaurant, and have largely succeeded.
