Kalinka restaurant's rustic facade is inviting on a
rainy, slushy St Petersburg evening, much as the village kabak (tavern) of
Russian provincial life in winter days of yore must have been a comforting
refuge from the elements, not to speak of wild beasts lurking in the forests.

Ruben Monakhov's soulful pastiche visions are being showcased at St Petersburg's Literary Memorial Dostoyevsky Museum from this Tuesday, November 21, until December 10. Generous smears and strong lines awash with color and texture convey the artist's experiential approach to otherwise prosaic subjects. The museum is located at Kuznechny Prospect, 5/2; opening hours -- 10 am to 5:30 pm.
