for this week

FUN AND ADVENTURE
The sturdy Russian horse makes a comeback
At different times in Russia's history the relationship between the horse and the Russian people has ranged from being a hobby and sport, to a matter of prestige, a symbol of the aristocracy and even a matter of state. Catherine Partsch, Yevgenia Borisova and Chris Graeme take a look at how the popularity of the horse is making a big comeback in St Petersburg.

ART SCENE
Feel the force
Quoting the so-called "Non-Manifesto" of artist duo Nikolai and Galina Skryl, there is also a different attitude towards painting and art in general: "Art is ahistoric -- it has neither past, nor present, nor future." The duo refuses to paint in a clear and descriptive way.

FOOD
RESTAURANT REVIEW: Quiet Russian dining meets Barry Manilow
I was keen to have an authentic Russian meal, and my dining companion assured me that the Universal would be a good place for the experience. On entering, you immediately get the feeling of a world-that-was, which somewhat intrigued me after the bright lights of some of the newer places in the center.

EXHIBITIONS
A carnival dance of color
Dramatic themes, laconic compositions and folk mysticism form the central themes in the work of St Petersburg artist Vyacheslav Mikhailov who is currently enjoying an exhibition at the Russian Museum's Marble Palace.

EXCURSIONS
In search of holy Russia
Russia's Golden Ring has nothing to do with jewelry by Faberge but it is equally as impressive and certainly ranks among the jewels in Russia's crown. It is a circle of old Russian cities to the northeast of Moscow -- residences of the princes who ruled Rus -- the heartland of today's Russia. The heyday of such famous medieval cities as Uglich, Yaroslavl, Plyos, Kostroma, Vladimir and Suzdal was between the 11th and 14th centuries, long before Moscow -- let alone St Petersburg -- became the capital.

MUSIC
Indie Club's Anniversary Night
The event at the club, which reopens on September 1, is billed "Indie Club's Anniversary Night." It's a strange billing when you consider that the club was in fact launched an uneven three-and a-half years ago, in early 1992.
