PERFORMING ARTS
The swan returns
Prima Ballerina Absoluta Galina Mezentseva, after five years in the West, had returned home to once again dance in the theater that catapulted her to international stardom 20 years ago. Galina is undoubtedly the most famous classical ballet dancer in the world -- a living legend. For the new generation of young dancers coming up at the Kirov, Bolshoy, Covent Garden and other famous ballet theaters, she is like a diamond, a touch of class.
Events for this week

FOOD
RESTAURANT REVIEW: Food, glorious food!
Oliver and all of Fagin's urchins would find enough to more than satisfy their appetites at the Imperial Restaurant. Perched above Nevsky Prospect, the Nevskij Palace's Imperial Restaurant offers a superb buffet for $34 a head.

EXIBITIONS
Devils behind the illuminator
This is not simply an exhibition. It is an installation which could almost be made up of funnels and other bits and pieces from the depths of a ship's hold. Perhaps an ocean-going vessel, perhaps a spaceship -- the gaping portholes affording us a view of the quirky world of St Petersburg artist Gennady Kornilov.
The lady who's all gone to pieces
A group of Dutch artists are exhibiting their works in the "Contemporary Dutch Artists in Russia" exhibition which opened last week in the Anna Akhmatova Museum in the Fontanny Dom.

MUSEUMS
Art heritage Saved for Humanity
Last week we looked at how the Hermitage's art collections were evacuated to Sverdlovsk. Apart from the general evacuation of treasures on 24 July 1941, 146 children belonging to the museum workers were packed off on that long and difficult journey eastwards. But as the German armies closed in, they cut off the rail routes out of the city and the evacuations came to an end. It was now up to the team of frightened but dedicated staff who stayed behind to guard the Hermitage.

MUSIC
The wild femmes of rock
Unlike Western music, where bands led by women have become commonplace, there is no phenomenon like "female rock" in Russia. Women who have made any impact on the national music scene are few and far between and the exception to the rule.
