The Fish Fabrique Club

by Sean Cosgrove

"A living room with a bar in it" is how one patron described Fish Fabrique, one of the more accessible among the spate of new clubs and bars in St Petersburg -- and, in the best sense, that's exactly what it is.

Based in what was a flat on Pushkin-skaya Ulitsa, the club is decorated with a kitschy conglomeration of stolen street signs and recycled scrap furniture.

It is a place for people to drink relatively cheaply, to dance or listen to the loud (usually), very up-to-date music, to chat and above all to relax.

The club is only open on weekends at present, but the management hopes that will change soon.

Fish Fabrique is a welcome change both from hard-nosed dance venues and Westerner-infested hotel bars and nightclubs. "A living room with a bar" it may be -- but it's a friendly living room, and there are far worse places to put your feet up at the end of a hard week.
