Pauli Kruhse from Helsinki (Finland) provides collection of documents and pictures pertinent to the history of Vyborg (Viipuri), a city in St.Petersburg region. This city is located near the border with Finland, on the north side of Finnish Bay, approximately 150km from Petersburg. Pauli Kruhse provides the following chronology: Viipuri (now Vyborg) was Finnish settlement as part of Sweden Kingdom in 1293-1710, it was part of Russian Empire in 1710-1917, part of Finland in 1917-1940, 1941-44. From 1944 onward, Vyborg is part of Russian Federation. All pictures below were taken in September 1996.

• The Round Tower (now Kruglaya Bashnya) on the Market Square, built by the order of Swedish king Gustavus Vasa in 1547-50; previously and now a restaurant. Inside: wall pictures by Finnish artist Topi Vikstedtin (1891-1930).
• The Belfry Tower of the Old Cathedral aka Watchtower, from 15th century (nyk. Ulitsa Storozhevoj Bashni). Another view on the upper part from the 18th century.
• The Castle

  The castle originates from 1293. Only a small part of the original is still left. The tower was rebuilt in 1561-64. Later the castle was left without proper care and was badly ruined. A large renovation was done in 1891-94.

  1. JPG image (86kb): towards the city harbour, the red building is the old Rathaus from the 17th century, later the city museum (1896). In front of the building there is a statue of the Swede Tyrgils Knutsson, founder of the castle.
