William Heusmann's well-illustrated diary. He writes at the beginning:
"For three weeks in May [1996], I experienced Russian language,
culture, history, and everyday life as few tourists ever do.
This site will attempt to convey my impressions of the former
Soviet Union at this time of great change and uncertainty.
While no expert in Russian affairs, I trust these personal experiences
may convey some of the essence of this great land."
He provides detailed impressions and excellent photos from
a three-week university study tour to St. Petersburg, Minsk and Moscow.
All images are copyright © 1996 Bill Heusmann (Des Moines, Iowa, USA).

(September 1994 - June 1995). A significant part of his
diary is devoted to Moscow: "It is a chaotic swirl
of people, a rushing mass, a thousand villages forced together under
one name and under no one's direction. It is the both the best planning
and the worst made manifest. It is apocalyptic, fantastic, and
endlessly fascinating... Follow the link and find out more
about his experience. Michael Scott is a senior student at Portland State
University, Oregon, USA. Comments to:
