Magadan from the hill top
Pictures from Magadan.
Magadan (150 degrees of eastern longitude, 60 degrees of northern latitude)
is an industrial, transport and administrative center in the Russian
Far East. The city is located on the bank of Okhotskoe See,
approximately 900km to the north-west from
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski
(
Kamchatka) and 1200km to the south-west from Bilibino,
Chukotka.
From the historical perspective, the city is mainly known
as a major transition place during the Stalin era for thousands
innocent people sentenced to Kolyma. Some historians consider
Magadan as a capital of the former GULAG - the state system
of working camps - an implementation of Lenin-Stalin idea about
the struggle between different economic classes.
- Larry Pearson presents his page
May in Magadan
with half a dozen photos, and another page with 8 pictures (180kb)
People of Magadan.
He wrote: "The Magadan street photo (N 23) in the Larry Jandro's
Siberia collection shows the building I stayed in when I was in Magadan last year. And my page has a photo (looking down from a window) that provides another perspective on the same scene. I expect to add a Khabarovsk page later".
