From the historical perspective, the city is mainly known as a major transition place during the Stalin era for thousands innocent people sentenced to Kolyma. Some historians consider Magadan as a capital of the former GULAG - the state system of working camps - an implementation of Lenin-Stalin idea about the struggle between different economic classes.

• David J. Nordlander, a PhD candidate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA), traveled to Magadan during the 1994-1995 academic year as an IREX Research Resident. He did there research on the topic Archives of the Gulag. He shares by his experience and provides detailed travel tips and information about Magadan.
