Yoshkar-Ola is the capital of Mari El republic, which is
a part of the Russian Federation.

from 1584, when the first fortress was built on the territory
occupied now by the city. According to a census conducted in the
January of 1897, the town had a population of 1656, 5 churches, 22
taverns and 1 hospital. Now, Yoshkar-Ola is the centre of Finno-Ugrian
culture with many artistic and cultural attractions: one of them is
V.S. Sheremetev's castle
(constructed in 1812) and estate.
Yoshkar-Ola is the focus of large-scale industry in the Volga region
with population about 400 thousands.
The city is located 862 kms to the east from Moscow; it is connected
with other regions by railways, roads, boat and airplane communications.
