Voronezh is the large administrative center of a region
located approximately 500km to the south-east from Moscow.
The city was founded about 400 years ago, when a multi-towered
fortress with an oaken stockade was built on the high bank of
the river Don to shield Rus' from the raids of nomadic tribes.
The modern Voronezh has become one of Russia's largest cities.
Voronezh's industries produce much of Russia's farm machinery,
presses, lathes, engines, television sets, radios, tires, and aluminum
construction materials. The Illytian Aircraft Factory, an
important Russian aerospace company is located in Voronezh.
Voronezh hosts several educational institutions.
There are four universities, four academies, dozens technical shools
and colleges.
