Salyut 5 Space Station
Overview
Although the Salyut 5's objectives were primarily military,
the missions also contained a great deal of scientific research.
The station was launched in June, 1976 and exhibited
the operational characteristics that identified it as a Almaz-type
military station. The configuration of Salyut 5 was nearly
identical to the Salyut 3 station.
Missions
Two successful missions were flown to Salyut 5. The 49-day
Soyuz 21 mission was launched in July 1976. The second
Soyuz flight to Salyut 5 was unable to dock and was therefore
aborted. The third Soyuz mission was launched in February
1977 and lasted 18 days.
