Salyut 4 Space Station
Overview
The Salyut 4 station was launched in December, 1974 and
was the second station devoted to primarily civilian objectives.
The Salyut 4 station was very similar to the Salyut 1 station, with
the addition of three rotatable solar arrays. It had the same
Soyuz-type propulsion module as Salyut 1 which was located at
the opposite end of the station from the docking module. Salyut 4
was designed to remain on orbit for up to 60 days and had an
extensive scientific complement.
Missions
Two successful Soyuz flights were flown to Salyut 4. Soyuz 17
lasted 29 days and was launched in January, 1975. The next
Soyuz flight was aborted after a launch failure. Luckily, the Soyuz
abort system operated properly and the cosmonauts were
recovered in the western USSR. The last Soyuz flight to Salyut 4
was launched on May 24, 1975. During the following 63 day
mission, the cosmonauts performed a variety of experiments.
