IKI was founded in 1965, and almost all its experiments and studies have been conducted using Russian (previously Soviet) automatic spacecraft, interplanetary and manned orbital stations, sometimes with foreign collaboration. IKI's space projects have yielded a great amount of important scientific data about the Solar system, stars, galaxies and other objects in the universe, cosmic plasma, near-Earth space, solar-terrestrial physics and methods for means of Earth exploration from space. Currently IKI is developing a project for the comprehensive exploration of Mars. Also being prepared are: "Spketr-Rentgen-Gamma" and "Relikt-2" (astrophysics) and "Interball" (solar-terrestrial physics)

IPM was founded in 1953 for calculation and research work for rocket ans space technology and nuclear power production. First missions to the Moon, Venus and Mars were prepared here. Also the first methods for passive attitude control and gravity maneuvers were worked out at IPM.
