NPO Energia, Ltd - A Gateway into Space

NPO Energia, Ltd. is the U.S. office of NPO Energia, the world-class Russian space organization devoted to the utilization of the space frontier. Since 1985, NPO Energia has been a leader in the commercial marketing of its space hardware and services, and today enjoys multi-million dollar contracts with organizations throughout the world community.

NPO Energia

NPO Energia's history dates back to the dawn of the space age. Under the guidance of the legendary Russian space designer S.P. Korolev, his organization developed Sputnik, which began the age of space exploration with its stunning success in 1957. Much later, it was NPO Energia which developed a manned space program second to none. Accomplishments include the first man in space, the first spacewalk, the first docking in space and still later, the development, construction and operation of the world's first manned space station. Other NPO Energia programs include the Energia launch vehicle, the upper stage of the Proton, the Soyuz transportation system and the MIR-1 space station.

During the Nixon-Brezhnev era of détente, it was the NPO Energia specialists which led the then-Soviet Union in the docking in space between the Apollo astronauts and Soyuz cosmonauts. NPO Energia's understanding of NASA thus goes back more than eighteen years.

With more than thirty years of manned space experience, including at least twenty operating increasingly complex space stations, it can safely be said that NPO Energia is a space company with unique capabilities and resources. Perhaps that is why the Wall St. analyst Wolfgang Demich, when asked to name the strongest space organization in the world, replied NPO Energia.

NPO Energia and Russian Reforms

Since the Gorbachev reforms NPO Energia has led Russian space organizations in undertaking commercial work with the West. For example:

--French cosmonauts have conducted a wide range of commercial and medical projects onboard the MIR-1 space station ;

--NPO Energia played host to a Japanese reporter who became the first reporter to fly in space;

--A German cosmonaut flew onboard the MIR and conducted quality research;

--NPO Energia is part of the international marketing organization LKE, which includes Lockheed Missiles and Space, Krunichev and Energia. To date, one major customer has been announced to fly commercial satellites on the Proton;

--The Rockwell Corporation has entered into an $18 million contract to use NPO Energia hardware for international docking programs, including the upcoming MIR-Shuttle missions;

--The Boeing Aerospace Corporation has flown a pharmaceutical project onboard the MIR. This experiment, commercially funded by Boeing, was completed in December of 1993, and already plans are underway for a second mission later in 1994.

"(NPO Energia) showed a tremendous can-do spirit, and a rock-solid commitment to do everything they said they were going to do. Every test was conducted on time, every milestone met, and the Progress capsule was launched within five minutes of the launch time scheduled six months earlier"

--Richard Grant, vice-president of business development Boeing Defense and Space Group

We have also met the needs of major non-aerospace customers. In late 1991, for example, the Coca-Cola company flew a specially designed soda can to the MIR for testing by the cosmonauts and a German television commercial was shot onboard the MIR in 1993.

NPO Energia and NASA

NPO Energia currently has a three year, $10 million contract with NASA to study use of the Soyuz vehicle as a return vehicle for occupants of the international space station.

In addition, NPO Energia is the prime Russian space organization tasked with the production and operation of the Russian side of the international space station.

Now that Russia is a full member of the international space station program, the continued integration of NPO Energia into the world community will only accelerate. The recently concluded four-year, $400 million contract between the Russian Space Agency and NASA for services onboard the MIR is a bold beginning to a new era in space.
