
The Cosmos 1443 vehicle was launched in March 1983 and mated with the
Salyut 7 station shortly thereafter. It provided attitude control for
the station complex and also was used for reboost. It
delivered 3,600 kg of supplies including Gallium Arsenide (GaAs)
solar arrays.
As shown in the above drawing, the Cosmos 1443 carried the Merkur
return capsule on the front end of the vehicle. This capsule was
designed to carry three crew, and although it was only tested in the
manned mode using test dummies, it was used twice to return
approximately 500 kg of cargo from the Salyut 7 station.
