PROGRAM: Fellowships will be offered for research and training in the social sciences and humanities relating to Albania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, the eastern part of Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and the former Yugoslavia. Proposals dealing with Germany should focus on the culture and society of the Communist period, its antecedents, or consequences. In awarding these grants, consideration is given to the scholarly merit of the proposal, its importance to the development of East European studies, and the scholarly potential, accomplishments, and financial need of the applicant. These fellowships provide a stipend for students who need an academic year of extra training before beginning the Ph.D. dissertation, because of the difficulties of combining area studies with work in a discipline.
QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents, and who are currently enrolled in a degree program and will have completed at least two academic years of work toward the doctorate by June 30, 1994.
MONETARY SUPPORT: $15,000 plus expenses.
