ACLS Eastern European Language Training Grants


AGENCY: American Council of Learned Societies

PROGRAM: Grants are offered for the first- or second-year study of any Eastern European language (except for those of the CIS) in the United States and for intermediate or advanced training in the languages in Eastern Europe. These grants are intended to support summer language training for students and scholars who cannot receive such training at their home institutions. In cases of special need, tutorial instruction during the academic year may be supported. Grants also will be offered to support instruction in certain of the least commonly taught Eastern European languages at summer programs in the United States, that is, Czech, Hungarian, Albanian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Romanian, Slovak, or Slovenian. Institutional applicants must submit applications by the January 15 deadline date; individuals must submit applications by March 1.

QUALIFICATIONS: Advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars are eligible to apply.

MONETARY SUPPORT: $2,000 - $2,500 for training in the United States and for language training in Eastern Europe.
