PROGRAM: These fellowships, authorized under Title VI of the Higher Education Act and administered by the US Department of Education, provide tuition and stipend support to students undergoing advanced training in designated foreign languages (Hausa, Swahili, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian) in combination with area studies, international studies, or international aspects of professional studies (medicine, law, business, etc.). Scholarships for the full academic year and for the summer are available. Applicants must present a specific study plan that includes language study throughout the award period. Applications for academic year awards are due by January 16; applications for summer awards are due April 16. For information and applications, contact the center.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States and must be enrolled in or accepted for enrollment in a graduate program at Stanford University.
RESTRICTIONS: Students studying French, Iberian Spanish, German, and Italian; who already possess language fluency equivalent to educated native speakers in the language for which the award is sought; who are taking the first 18 semester hours (27 quarter hours) in either Latin American Spanish or Russian; and who are taking the first 12 hours (18 quarter hours) in Chinese or Japanese will receive very low priority.
MONETARY SUPPORT: $7000 stipend and tuition for academic year; $1500 stipend and tuition for summer
