1) STATISTICS: The following statistics are from a source at the Russian Embassy:
As of July 1, 1995, there were 284.4 thousand private farms in Russia which occupied 12.1 mil hectares (29.9 mil acres). These farms account for 5.5% of the total agricultural land in the country.
There still exist about 30,000 former state and collective farms averaging approximately 6,100 ha (15,000 acres) each. Most of these have been reorganized into various forms of joint-stock companies and partnerships, but over 5,000 remain collective farms (kolkhozes) and 2,500 remain state farms (sovkhozes).
