ICT is one kind of CT system specially for testing and evaluating industrial products nondestructively. Being similar to X-ray CT in clinical diagnosis, the gamma-ray emitted from an ICT radiates through an object and reaches the detectors from different directions. The computer attached to ICT is used to calculated data gained from detectors and to reconstruct a 2-dimensional image of a plane. Many 2-dimensional images pile up a 3-dimensional cubic model which can exhibite the physical and mechanical characters of the examined object, such as structure, defects, variety of composition and density.
While making the second PET, the group developed an ICT prototype in May 1994, and then the first commercial mode --ICT-B01 accomplished at the beginning of 1995. The main norms--such as spatial resolution (0.25mm or 2 lp/mm), density resolution (1%) and scanning time (3min/image) are at the advanced level in this country, approaching the international level. ICT-B01's good performance, short scanning time, multifunction (tomography and fluoroscopy), especially its low price make it the best choice for the users in China.
ICT can be used in many fields to do quality control for industrial products and safety checking for machines in working, for example in the on-line control and quality testing in iron industry, say, in a seamless steel tube plant; in interior structure measurement of precise casting (such as vanes of airplane engine); in size and impurity measurement of wire and cable used in large generator and power plant; in routine inspection of damageable parts on train, airplane, submarine and other huge machines in working; in quality control in the automobile industry; in density checking of gunpowder and inspection of important components of weapon in military industry; in evaluation of core sample and inspection of welds and ceramics on oil pole and tube in petroleum industry; in sample evaluation in fossil and geology archaeology; in customs inspection for safety and examination of smuggling goods.
Many workpieces have been tested on this ICT satisfactorily. When scanning a vane cast in the airplane engine, its interior structure is shown very clearly and the measurement precision is 0.1mm.
What more amazing is, for the first time, a dozen fossils of dinosaur eggs were put onto the ICT's platform for scanning. A later embryo is found in one of the fossils. The result attracts many attention among the physicists and palaeontologists. Now, they are applying for authority to break this egg fossil to confirm this discovery with chemical and palaeontologic analyses. Thousands of dinosaur egg fossils have been unearthed recent years in China, and more researches can be done in this field so as to uncover the mystery of the great extinction of dinosaur.
