BEPC's Spinoff to Summarize

A special symposium was held at this institute on April 13-14, aiming at reviewing and evaluating the social and economic benifits brought in by BEPC_ Project, and seeking both the direct and the potential effects of basic sciences (especially big science and big project) on social and economic development in this country, on purpose to offer some scientific basis for policy-making in planning basic research programs for the coming 5 years or even for next century.

It was the first time after the setting up of BEPC in 1988 that scientists, engineers and technicians from institutions, factories and plants which had took an active part in BEPC's construction gathered at IHEP to have serious discussions on such a topic with BEPC staffs.

Professor Zheng Zhipeng briefed the operation status of BEPC and the important physics results obtained at BES (Beijing Spectrometer) during the past 6 years, in particular, in pricise measurement of tau lepton's mass.

Professor Wang Taijie, Head of the Computation Centre of the institute, introduced the development of the computer network which benifits greatly from the BES international collaboration in high energy physics researches. Now, connected with Internet, the centre can not only essure the transmission of BES data and academic exchange between China and US, but also provides lots of Chinese scientists and organizations with rapid communication and rapid information indexing.

It is very reasonable that IHEP is the biggest benificiary from BEPC construction which provided a unique chance for training scientists, technicians and workers in accelrator design, manufacture and operation. The factory of the institute has been equipped with lots of up-to-date machines and apparatus. Owing to all these developments, IHEP was able to export some accelarator parts or even a whole accelerator to US, Brazil, South Korea and Japan in past years, which, in turn, has greatly supported basic researches in the institute.

According to Mr. Zang Yan, chief engineer of BEPC project, " Two thirds of the BEPC's budget were gone to industrial sector. Besides, the investments in manpower and equipment may bring about some secondary effect, we should account it into consideration when valuating BEPC's economic spinoff."

Participants from factories gave their brief reports, and more detailed investigation reports will be prepared after the meeting.

The symposium is the first step of such an investigation, more works should be done later on to reach a reliable report.
