BEPC£¯ BES£¯ BSRF Upgrading Project Passed Appraisal

    After about five-year teamwork£¬the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider(BEPC)£¬Beijing
Spectrometer(BES) and Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility(BSRF) upgrading projeet passed
CAS's (the Chinese Academy of Sciences) appraisal in the special meeting held by CAS on
February 7£¬1999 in the Institute of High Energy Physics(IHEP).
The upgrading project is aiming at higher performance of BEPC£¯ BES£¯ BSRF. The great
efforts made by the scientists and engineers in IHEP have been rewarded by success. The energy
of the injection beam of the linac rises from 1.3GeV to 1.5GeV£¬while the luminosity of the
collider increases by a factor of two in the J£¯¦· region£® The upgraded detectors£¬BES£¬
performes well both globally and individually. All of 15 improved or new items in BSRF reached
their specifications. The operation of BEPC£¯ BES£¯ BSRF bas been showing good performance.
    A committe with 12 specialists£¬headed by Professor B.W£®Wei£¬made a crosscheck to the
performance of the machine£¬the detector and the SR facility£¬and concluded that the target
specifications of the upgrading project had been reached and the project successfully
completed. It is expected that the completion of the BEPC£¯ BES£¯ BSRF upgrade will promote
the development of high energy physics research and synchrotron radiation applicadons in
China.

Fourth IHEP£¯ KEK Collaboration Meeting Held in Japan

The Fourth IHEP£¯ KEK Collaboration Meeting was held at KEK from March l2 to 13 1999.
During the meeting£¬Professor H. Sugawara£¬ Director-general of KEK and Professor Chen
Hesheng£¬Director of IHEP£¬China£¬introduced the current statuts of each own institute. The
participants were greatly inspired by the achievements made both at KEK and IHEP£®
Both sides reviewed satisfactorily the collaborative efforts for the past year and
discussed about the collaborative items proposed by IHEP for next year. As a result of
friendly discussions and consultations, an agreement has been reached for collaboration
between the two institutions£¬ including the items of BELLE experiment£¬linear collider£¬
superconducting technology£¬computer network£¬synchrotron radition£¬upgrade of the BEPC£¬
photoelectron instability experiment and the JSPS£¯ CAS Asian Acceleratr School£®
Both sides have made a decision to extend the agreement on IHEP£¯ KEK collaboration signed
on August 2£¬1994 and the three agenda for another five years.
As a suggestion of IHEP£¬ both sides agreed to investigate the possibility of referring
the agreement on IHEP£¯ KEK collaboration to some governmental agreement for easy handling of
import£¯ export procedures.
In addition£¬during his private conversation with Professor Chen Hesheng£¬Professor
H.Sugawara pledged his support to whatever project IHEP is going to under take in the future£®

Software for Prevention of Cracker Intrusion

In the year of 1993£¬not long aner the first opening of Internet in China by Institute of
Higb Energy Physics(IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS)£¬it was found that a cracker
had broken into a host running VAX OS£®The formidable menace to the security of network system
immediately attracted the attentions of the Computing Center.
In order to prevent the crackers from intruding the computers unlawfully£¬besides the
enactment of computer user's regulations£¬IHEP consciously intensified the training of the
system managers£¬yet several graduate students completed their theses on the topics of topics
networking security.
In August 1997£¬the High Technology Bureau of CAS granted fund to support the IHEP Group
to research and develop a software for the prevention of cracker intrusion. The members
carefully studied various behaviours on the intrusion of the crackers£¬analyzed the updated
preventing technology home and abroad£¬conjoined their own experiences£¬accomplished the
pivotal task one year ahead of the time£¬opened out Software for the Prevention of Cracker Intrusion£®
The software is aimed to design an effective program to eliminate the secmity weak points
existing in the network engineering at present£¬it mainly consists of a set of testing program
of network security and system security£¬with providing relevant patching methods and security
suggestions. Among its specific functions are: network security test£¬system security test£¬
Web server security test£¬security hole test£¬security hole patching and security monitoring.
In August 1998£¬CAS held a meeting for certificating the Software for the Prevention of
Cracker Instrusion£¬the experts unitedly considered¡±the software system is a better practical
one£¬with the design reasonable£¬the technology advanced£¬the function perfect£¬all the
modules isolated£¬related and cooperated together.¡±
In November 1998, the certification to sell the softtware in market was granted for the
first time by the Ministry of Public Security of P.R.C.
At present day£¬ this software has already created remarkable social and economic effcts.
In the meantime£¬the group is unremettingly struggling to upgrade the software for the sake
of facing the new challenge.
