I am doing research on how thirty years (1958-88) years of cultural and scholarly exchanges between the Soviet Union and the United States helped to change Soviet society and prepare the way for glasnost and perestroika, and much that followed.
I am interested in hearing from Russians and other former citizens of tghe Soviet Union who participagted in the US-USSR exchange programs, and learning how the exchange helped their careers, affected their views of the Soviet Union and the United Ststes, and may have contributed to the changes in Soviet society that resulted from study and visits to the West.
My grandparents were born in Hussenbach(Linevo Osero) in the late 1880-1890's. I am trying to find out how I would beable to find out who there parents were. Last relatives left in 1941 to Siberia. Would also like to know about the place now and what it is like.

Hi all:
I have friends here in Michigan who are trying to
adopt a little boy and girl from orphanages in
Irkutsk. As you can imagine, they are worried
sick about the plane crash because it supposedly
hit an orphanage in Irkutsk. The little boy is
in Orphanage #2 in Irkutsk. Can anyone tell us
whether this was the orphanage which was hit by
the plane??

In a very little class at the narodnij yniversitet in 's-Hertogenbosch (Holland)we (four people) try to learn the russian language. Why? Speaking for myself, seven years ago I worked in Russia (Kashira, Mosk. obl.)and since then I love Russia and Russian people.
Is there anyone in the former SU (perhaps in Kashira?) who wants to write us? We are able to write in cyrillic characters (koi-8, etc).

I teach the Russian language to 5th graders at an elementary school in rural Alabama (USA). I minored in Russian during the height of the Cold War. SE of Moscow. Also analyzed artifacts in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Last September I made my sixth trip to Russia to
participate in an internationa archaeological conference, in Zaraysk. Then spent a week in St. Petersburg doing research. My travel was
funded by an International Researches Exchange grant. Next summer I plan to return with two groups of amateur archaeologists to

Hi! I happened upon this site doing some geneology research on my father's family. My grandparents, David & Katherine Stahr, came from the villages of Kraft & Shilling (in the Saratov area of Volga River). My grandmother's maiden name was Gross and she had three sisters. Mary and Agnes came to Canada with my grandmother, but one sister stayed--her name was Annie. My grandparents arrived in Galveston, Texas, USA in 1910. My grandfather was born July 18, 1884 and my grandmother was born April 12, 1885. If anyone has any information, I would very much appreciate a response.

So, when I was studing Russian Literature in the U.S. My proffessor, Irish decent. Studied at Moscow University, thought in all her years of teaching she had never met anything as intense as I. I am intense I love the music, I love the people who use to come and play the Balilika(sp) for my family on holidays. I miss passion and integrity. I miss my cultural background. And, mind you in the U.S. , with Mc Carthiesm, my family was subject to the same scrutiny. Yes, the F.B.I. had tabs on us. I studied the Russian language til I realized the head of the dept. was Iex. CIA, member and that I would be on their file.I don't want anyone invading my privacy.Not to say this isn't a fact anyway. PLease talk to me and help me to sleep soundly at night.

Hello! This past spring I was envolved in awesome project, an exchange student program with the Russian town of Puschino. It is so cool to have "been there done that" and then be sitting at my house, in America, seeing it on my computer. Technology is amazing isn't it??? In January, 10 Russian students and two teachers from Puschino came and spent three weeks with us, living in our homes, eating our food, expierencing our culture. It was so cool to watch them and their reactions to everything. I'll never forget, we walked out of the airport and she saw all the cars and she was like so many pretty cars! It was really fun getting to know them and making memeories, they'll be with me forever. Then in March, the ten that had hosted them went over there and we stayed in their homes, ate their food, definately expierenced their culture. I will never forget any of it. I can be anywhere and all of a sudden just "be back", walking with Veronica and you know, just being there. Moscow is such a pretty city, we were there at the beginning and end of our trip. I loved it, every minute of it and I can't wait to go back. If you ever have a chance to go to Russia, Puschino is the town!

Our family has over the years hosted 18 exchange students and I used to be a part time coordinator and placed many other. Most we hosted were here for one month in the summer, but 5 were here the entire school year. It was great for our family and both our daughters benefitted greatly to from it now being fluent in several languages besides English and have an appreciation for other countries cultures. Most of the students we hosted
were from Spain, france and Mexico, but one was from Yugoslavia. I'd love to hear from any russian people living in Russia to learn more about that culture. Hope to hear from you soon :-)

I am trying hard to learn russian. My wife and her family speak it, and the people I work with speak it, but no one has the time or the patience to teach me (not that i'm stupid, but teaching a language is time-consuming and can be irritating for anyone). I'm an incredibly quick learner, and my english is excellent. I have been picking things up here and there rather quickly, but not fast enough. I've spent money on books, but it's not good enough because it cannot correct me when I am wrong. I have spent so much on books and tapes, I can't spend anymore on interactive software that might help. Does anyone know of a website that will give good lessons or references for free?
