Company: Mathematical Machines Plant (MMP) Product/Service: Electronic Components/Computers/Etc. Mathematical Machines Plant (MMP) is a large state computer manufacturer that was established in 1957. One of the first of its kind in the Soviet Union, the firm has a long history of producing limited series electronic computing systems for Soviet civil and military needs. Production has included Nairi and Razdan computers (1957-1991); EC-1030, EC-1045, and EC-1046 mainframe computers (1969-1992); as well as peripherals. After partial conversion, MMP recently started production of a variety of consumer and industrial electronic appliances. Production is sold in Armenia and is exported to Russia, Ukraine, and Turkmenistan. MMP will be fully privatized in 1996. The company presently has 1,300 employees, and owns premises totaling 36,500 square meters, including 25,000 square meters of industrial space and 5,000 square meters of storage space. The firm has metal and plastics processing equipment; equipment for manufacturing one- sided, double-sided, and multi-layer electronic boards; electronics assembly lines; equipment for production of cylindrical magnetic films and magnetic film-based memory devices from NEC (Japan); mechanical and climatic testing laboratories; and laboratories for testing input components. MMP is looking for a U.S. partner to organize joint production of electronic components, computers, and general consumer electronics from components to be partially supplied by the partner. At present, MSH is situated on the territory of the Yerevan Mathematical Machines Plant (see above), with which it has a long-term lease agreement. MSH's staff consists of 35 highly trained main specialists as well as contract personnel. MSH continues to specialize in development and production of computerized numerical control (CNC) systems (electronic blocks for motorized controllers); special electricity generators for programmable machine tools; electrical discharge machining; as well as service and warranty of its products. MSH is working to expand its research and product line. Among other projects, the company is planning to start production of CNCs based on NWC650 or AWS860 computers. The products will be supplied to machinery building plants in Armenia, the NIS, and abroad. The new projects will allow MSH to increase annual turnover up to US$3 million in the coming three years. Established in 1972, Lazerain Technika Research and Development Company (LTRDC)is one of the key developers and producers of laser crystals, optical elements, lasers, and laser-based technological equipment in the NIS. Metallist Plant was founded in 1956 to produce grenades for the defense industry. In 1993 the plant was transformed into a joint stock company; all shares are now owned by private individuals. Metallist has 170 employees who produce over 490,000 units per year of various types of lamps, chandeliers, metal furniture, and consumer goods. According to an assessment of the federal electric company Rossiyskiy Svet (Russian Light), the annual requirement for lamps in the Russian Far East is 20 million units. The nearest factory producing lamps is located in the western Siberian city of Tomsk. For this reason, Metallist will be given a state guarantee for its lamp project's foreign investments as well as an allocation of quartz sand deposits. Metallist Plant wishes to establish a joint venture to produce energy-saving lamps for the Russian Far East and northern territories of China.
