Hi,

US-Russia Student Leadership Summit

Democratic Partners:
Russia-America Student Leader Summit
April 5-11, 2000
Stanford University, California, U.S.A.

If you are a Russian university student interested in the democratic
development of both Russia and the United States, you should apply to be a
student delegate at the 1999 Russia-America Student Leadership Summit, at
Stanford University, California. This one-week program will bring together
the best and the brightest 25 Russian and 25 American leaders of tomorrow
from the top universities in their countries. The program will address the
democratic progress and challenges of both nations. It will feature
well-known speakers, and workshops in political activism, student and
community leadership, community service, and the future of the
Russian-American relationship. During the conference delegates will design
community service and leadership projects, which they will carry out upon
returning home.

This conference will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet with
future leaders from around the world. Student delegates will receive
training in how to become more effective community leaders, and receive the
benefit of global experience.

The program is very competitive, and only 25 places are available for
Russian delegates. Student delegates will be given full scholarships to
attend the conference in April 2000. All expenses (round-trip
transportation to the United States, meals and housing, and conference
programs) will be paid for. Student delegates will be selected based on
commitment to public service, outstanding leadership potential, political
and community involvement, high academic achievement, and interest in the
democratic development of Russia and America. Students who have assumed
leadership responsibilities in their universities, communities, or chosen
professions, and participate in the Russian political process are
especially encouraged to apply. All participants must be fluent in English.

Applications will be available in early September, and due October 30.
Applications are available electronically (www.actr.org/stanford) and can
be submitted either by fax or mail. Finalists will be notified in November,
and interviewed in late November or early December. Delegates and
alternates will be notified of their selection in January.

Please email zaltz@leland.stanford.edu or mattspen@leland.stanford.edu for
more information, or to request an application.

Hello -
I am looking for someone who is going to be traveling from the U.S. to
St. Petersburg, Russia, in the near future. I have five medium-sized
paperback books on English grammar/conversation that I want to send to a
pen-pal who is studying English (doing a very fine job at it, too, judging
by his letters). If there is anyone out there who could help me with this,
could you drop me a line? I'd be very much obliged.
Thank you!

Subject: Cerebral Palsy, search for treatment-related information

Hello everybody.
I'm a doctor from Ukraine. A friend of mine has got a boy of four who
suffers from cerebral palsy. I'm very interested in any new information
regarding treatment of this condition. Browsing through internet I haven't
been successful to find comprehensive data on the subject so far. The
information is incomplete and often for non-professional use. I found some
commercial sites advertising books which titles look suitable but whether
their contents are worth-while is very difficult to estimate. If anyone
has some tips please get in touch with me. Karch Alexander.

Subject: writer needs info/ old soda machines in Russia

I am writing a short story that features the soda/vending machines that
were common in Russia up until the early nineties. I know a good deal
about these machines, i.e. that they were coin operated, that you could
choose between a plain soda or sweet drink, and that soda was dispensed
into a glass cup that could be rinsed by each user.

My russian friend, Yuri has explained all this to me, but I am still
looking for more detail about just what the cup looked like. Can anyone
describe to me this cup? How thick was the glass, how big was the glass,
what was it's exact shape?

Actually any additional info on these vending machines would be very
helpful. I am writing a humorous and tender piece about Russians and
Americans trying to get to know one another. I would greatly appreciate
your assistance in making my story more precise.

Sincerely, Cathy Rose
