Subject: Reply to Books

I am replying to your message regarding English books being sent for
your 12 year old daughter. May I make a few suggestions. I once
attempted something similar about 8 years ago when I shipped medical
books to the university in Budapest Hungary in 1992, and ran into a few
problems. If I were to do it over again, I would suggest it might be
more effective to make it a project for an American organization rather
than individual.

I belong to a Women's Club in Palo Alto, Ca. Women's Clubs in the US,
although not as popular in recent American History, began in the
nineteenth century, and were very active community service organizations
in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. For example, they
were part of the campaign for the women's vote, (achieved in 1920)
prohibition (the period from 1919 to 1932 in which alcoholic consumption
was outlawed in the US. Women were desperate for an answer to
alcoholism, which was a very serious problem in the US at the time)
libraries, conservation, to name a few. The women's club in Palo Alto
which began in 1895 was so industrious that it raised $4000 at the turn
of the century to build its own building. I am wondering if there are
any parallel women's service organizations in Russia.

If so, I would suggest a collaborative project, where the US women's
club was the collection point and the Russian women's organizations were
the distribution point. It seems one of the major obstacles one has to
overcome seems to be customs. I was just reading an article in our local
newspaper about an Oklahoma doctor who had collected $800,000 in medical
supplies which were shipped to Russia and were unable to make it through
customs. Both the American and Russian physician were quite distressed
about it since the supplies were greatly needed and both had spend a
great deal of time and effort on the project. An organizational
approach has a better chance, I believe, in overcoming that difficulty.

If you think the idea a worthwhile one, I will take it up with the
leadership of the club at a monthly meeting.

Dear Sir or Madame,

My family and I are interested in moving to St. Petersburg, Russia, in a
year and a half or so. My wife is a Russia citizen, our baby daughter and I
are US citizens.

I am having difficulty in finding out information on through the Internet
about how I can move there on a more or less permanent basis.

The best I've been able to figure out is that I can get a year long visa and
renew it each year.

Do you know how I can find out more information?

Don't they have something like a Green Card the US has?
