Subject: Russian country music stars
Name: Nina Seavey
Email-address: seavey@gwu.edu
I am a fixlmmaker in the U.S. who is making a film about seven Russian
teenagers who have come to this country to become country music stars. The
group, known now as the Siberian Heatwave, have signed a contract with
Arista Records in Nashville and are here now recording their first album.
I am following this group in the recording studio, back to Russia in late
October to film their backstory, and on the country music circuit as they
attempt to make it in this very competitive music industry. But they are
amazing musicians and I think they will have a great career here in the
U.S. and later in Europe. We are still raising money to support the
production of the film and I was wondering if you knew of Russian Cultural
Agencies, Foundations, or Companies that might like to invest in this kind
of a cross-cultural project. The film will be released theatrically and
then for broadcast here in the U.S. and also in Europe. I have looked on
your website and I didn't find anything that particularly would help me,
but I thought you might have some further thoughts. I thank you in advance
for your attention. Regards, Nina Seavey, Producer/Director "Singing in
Country"

Subject: Russian documentaries
Mosaic Films has produced a number of documentaries made in and about
Russia, some of which are available on VHS. They are unique in that they
show Russia today.
Five years ago a team of Russian filmmakers armed with camcorders followed
the lives of their fellow citizens for a BBC series called RUSSIAN
WONDERLAND. Since then the country has fought a war in Chechnya and seen
the economy go from boom to bust.
In RETURN TO WONDERLAND, our filmmakers revisit some of the characters to
see how they are coping now. They also bring us some new stories about
everyday life in the largest country in the world. A country the Russians
ironically and affectionately call "Wonderland".
RETURN TO WONDERLAND is a far cry from familiar news images. Here we see
Russia through Russian eyes. The series is exceptional in that it shows an
intimacy with the various subjects that can only be achieved with our
special technique of using native award winning talent. It reflects a
country in chaos shown through the lives of ordinary people and received
considerable critical acclaim when shown on BBC2 earlier this year:
"You may recall the series, five years ago, called RUSSIAN WONDERLAND,
which gave
Westerners an unprecendented look at the lives of ordinary Russians (who,
ironically, refer to their country as Wonderland). This three-part sequel,
shown over three nights, is simply wonderful ( no irony intended)."
- Critics Choice, The Times, 1.6.99
"a rich, emotional tapestry presenting a view of Russia the West rarely sees"
- Radio Times
"Russian life is documented with elegance, wit and charm in a series of
miniature real-life dramas"
- The Mail, 30.5.99
"RETURN TO WONDERLAND is the sort of programme that really will change for
ever the popular conception of life in modern Russia....
These are haunting films that have the bitter tang of authenticity about them"
- Joe Joseph, The Times, 2.6.99
"filmed with compassion and intellectual curiosity"
- Robert Hanks, The Independent, 3.6.99
Both series are available on VHS. To learn more about RUSSIAN WONDERLAND,
RETURN TO WONDERLAND and Mosaic's work in Russia, please refer to our

Over the past few years, we have made about 8 or 10 trips to St.
Petersburg and Validmir in an attempt to develop contacts with various
folkcraft artists. We have been able to establish a working
relationship with about ten different families, mostly in the Vlaidimir
area. In the past, we have been satisfied in bringing merchandise back
to the States in our suitcases that we sold either at various gift shows
or on our website, "www.giftstotreasure.com". We think that we are on
the verge of being able to significantly increase our efforts but
seemingly face a difficulty in exporting our material. Do you know of
any source here in the States that could act as a consultant for us to
lead us through the maize of Russian exporting requirements.
Thank you.

Subject: Seeking Contact with Kaptjuks
Greetings,
I am seeking help in contacting anyone called Kaptjuk (Kaptiuk,
Kaptiouk) of Minsk or Vileyka, Minskaia-Guberniya. My grandfather,
Wasyl (Vassilii, Vassilij) Kaptiuk emigrated to the US from Vileyka
shortly before Russia entered the First World War, and was the only
member of his family to come here. Everyone who was still alive was
still living in Vileyka when my grandfather returned for a visit in
1967.
A Vassilij Kaptjuk of Belarus was the bronze medalist in the 1996
Olympics in Atlanta. Since he bears my grandfather's name, I would be
interested in contacting him, but I'm also interested in any other
Kaptjuks out there.
I've been running into dead ends in terms of actually reaching anyone,
so any help I can get would be really appreciated.
Thanks!

PRACTICE RUSSIAN WITH A FRIEND IN RUSSIA
Are you interested in Russian culture, language, literature, poetry
and do you experience a fascination for Russia? Then I invite you to
come and visit! I am a Russian male, and a graduated biologist by
profession, my age is 26, and I like to be a tour guide for foreign
visitors coming to St. Petersburg. Apart from the usual places of
interest, I can guide you along unusual, unknown, romantic monuments
in and around St Petersburg (like the decaying palaces of Strel'ny),
and inform you about their role in Russian history. For those
interested I organize combined courses in Russian poetry and
literature and excursions to corresponding literary sites (individuals
and small groups of up to 5 persons). I myself write and publish
poetry, and I am an artist of modern painting (which I have for sale).
I can also bring you into contact with artists and authors, and other
interesting people. Tickets to a variety of cultural events are
available for extra charge. I can find lodging and board for you, as a
paying guest, in a Russian family, in the first place my own family.
Prices are low, and in addition you will have the occasion to get
acquainted with Russians and to become friends. I can also book hotel
rooms: prices will of course be higher. My prices are very reasonable;
they can be sent to you on demand by e-mail. Those interested can
receive more extensive documentation by e-mail. I can also provide
recommendations from earlier guests.
