of a Siberian railway worker, her visibility shocked a country long used to
keeping Politburo wives under wraps. Many Russians disliked Mrs.
Gorbachev, who said last December she understood why some called her the
"Czarina."
"I was the first wife of a head of the Soviet government to appear on TV.
And that's obviously the fate of anyone who goes first," she said.
Gorbachev conceded in his memoirs that even his mother had never liked his
wife. But he never left any doubt that Raisa -- his "Raya" -- was the love
of his life, his soul mate and partner in both family life and politics.
"We were bound first of all by our marriage, but also by our common views
on life," Gorbachev wrote. "We both preached the principle of equality.
We shared our common cares and helped each other always and in everything."
Together they organized a foundation and clinic for children with
leukemia, years before Mrs. Gorbachev was diagnosed with the disease.
She remained largely out of the public eye in the 1990s. After being held
captive during a failed coup attempt in 1991, she suffered what has been
described as either a stroke or a nervous breakdown. She returned to her
husband's side during his disastrous run for Russia's presidency in 1996.
After Gorbachev had lost his position in the 1991 collapse of the Soviet
Union, she conceded that their lives had become "a bit more gloomy." In
1996, she told a Russian newspaper that she had begun selling off her
wardrobe of evening dresses because she no longer needed them.
In a statement issued Monday, Russian President Boris Yeltsin -- who
succeeded Gorbachev in the Kremlin when the Soviet Union dissolved at the
end of 1991 -- said he was "pained" to hear of Mrs. Gorbachev's death.

I want to suggest you to start an action "Book Aid". I am a
Russian from St.Petersburg. My daughter studies English. She
is 12 years old. And she needs some English books to read.
There are few of them in our municipal library. I know her
school-mates need such books also. So I would like to ask
our American friends to help Russian children. If they have
any books they don't need any more, maybe they could send
them to our libraries. Perhaps they can send us some
withdrawn books from school libraries.
Sorry for my poor English. Hope you understand what I
want to say. I published this letter in F&P guestbook. But
maybe it is possible to make a individual item "Book Aid"
on your site.
Thanks in advance.
Sincerely, Vadim

Dear Sir, I am a church musician living in Lumberton, NC. Back in 1990, I
was part of a choir from the University of Iowa which got to sing a concert
tour in Russia. While in Moscow, we had the opportunity to visit Arbat
Street, where the street artists sold their wares. Two of us were
transfixed by the craft of a particular artist who drew a picture of an 8
year old girl, who was out with her grandmother. We liked the picture so
much that we bought it from the grandmother and paid for her to have the
picture drawn again! The girl signed the picture with her first and last
name, age, and city, but that is all. I would now like to try and
reestablish contact with her if at all possible. I do have a scanned image
of the picture, but since I do not speak Russian, I am not sure I can make
out the script Cyrillic as rendered by an 8 year old. Would you be able to
assist me in pursuing such a "needle in a haystack?" Any suggestions you
might have would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Mark W. Frazier

Subject: Information
Hi: Found your site so full of information on Belarus!
This summer I met two exchange students from Belarus who were working at
one of the many summer camps in our area.
The intelligence, charm and humility of these sweet young ladies
completely captivated me and have brought so much joy change in my
life. I am ashamed to say that I did not even know where Belarus was
when they told me their country's name. Now, because of the positive
impression these ladies have made on me, I have developed a great
interest in the homeland that shaped their lives. The Internet has
provided me with a broad picture of Belarus, but I hope to learn more
about this country and its people.
I felt an immediate bond with one of them when I first met her, When
her work experience is finished in a few weeks, she will be my house
guest until mid-October, and then will return to Belarus. Both of them
are planning to come back to my area next summer to work.
Besides giving me direction to more relevant information about this
"newly found" (to me) country, I would like your advice on one
particular item.
I have told Volha that the two areas of development in which to focus
before her return to the USA are: 1) perfect her English to the best of
her ability, and 2) learn as much as she can about computers.
My question is: How can I obtain some information about the cost,
availability and steps to take to (hopefully) provide her with a
computer upon her return to Belarus?
Thank you for your Website and the good will you are promoting between
the USA and Belarus!
