Hi,
Our family has over the years hosted 18 exchange students and I used
to be a part time coordinator and placed many other. Most we hosted
were here for one month in the summer, but 5 were here the entire
school year. It was great for our family and both our daughters
benefitted greatly to from it now being fluent in several languages
besides English and have an appreciation for other countries
cultures. Most of the students we hosted were from Spain, france and
Mexico, but one was from Yugoslavia. I'd love to hear from any
russian people living in Russia to learn more about that culture.
Hope to hear from you soon :-)

Thank you

A friend of ours in St.Petersburg, Russia is suffering from late stage
of abdominal cancer.

She is a young woman, single mother and the only breadwinner for a
family of three.

It's not much that we can do from here, but one thing that doctor
recommended is to provide her with a special nutrition for cancer
patients, called ENSURE. She cannot eat and her conditions are miserable
to say the least.

We bought ENSURE here, they have it in every supermarket, but an air
mail is incredibly expensive and slow.

We would like to ask if anybody in the US (especially Boston area) is
going to St.Petersburg in the near future and willing to bring with you
any amount of ENSURE. One pack is 4 pounds. We'll help you to pack it,
if you wish, and our friends will pick it up in Russia.

WE UNDERSTAND HOW HARD IT IS FOR YOU, TRAVELERS, BUT PLEASE TRY TO MAKE
AN EFFORT AND HELP A PERSON IN A DESPERATE SITUATION.

We ask also if anybody knows for sure that this substance -- ENSURE - is
available in stores in Russia. We cannot get a definitive answer so far.

Subject: SCIENTIST: Fellowship: NIS Social Scientists

            ***RSS Solicits Nominations and Applications***
                      from NIS Social Scientists
                      for AAAS Fellowship Program

The Rural Sociological Society (RSS), in collaboration with the
American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) invites
Newly Independent State (NIS) social scientists to apply for a
one-month Fellowship program to be held in Washington D.C. and a host
 American institution.

RSS is inviting applications and nominations of social scientists
from NIS countries (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Armenia,
Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakstan, Kyrgystan, Tadjikistan, Turmenistan,
Uzbekistan) to participate in this program.

The program is funded by a grant from the U.S. National Science
Foundation. It allows representatives from scientific associations in
NIS countries to come to the United States for four weeks to see how
such associations are run in the United States and to share
information on how associations in NIS countries are organized.

The program runs for four weeks beginning the first week in
September. The RSS invites applications to participate in this
program. Travel, lodging, and per diem would be provided by AAAS.
The first two weeks would be spent in an orientation program with US
scientists and other NIS society representatives. This program
introduces the attendees to how science is organized in the US. The
second two weeks would be spent at AAAS, RSS, and a host institution
learning about RSS operations, publications, and other issues.

Applicants should send a letter of interest, a resume or curriculum
vita with their professional background information, and two
reference letters by April 1, 1999. The application letter should
outline how the applicant will be positioned to contribute to the
development of one or more social science associations in the home
country. The letter also should identify previous institutional
contacts or preferences for contact for the additional two weeks of
their U.S. visit. Such contacts should have as their focus some
previous or current RSS President or society officer. The Fellow
without such contacts will be linked to an RSS institution and
 collaborator.

Applications will be received and reviewed by the RSS Liaison
Committee to the AAAS and the RSS President, and a recommendation
forwarded to AAAS for final selection of the Program Fellow.

"Living Through China's Turmoil in the 20th Century"

The autobiography starts at his birth on July 1, 1927, and covers the
unbelievable journey through his life. We are still uncovering
memories from his early childhood years, and fleshing out what he was
really thinking and experiencing. Tommy is a true gentlemen and we
look forward to publishing his story.

credit line for SMEs, MEDA projects. I speak fluent English, French,
Spanish, an average Russian and German. I am available for every part
of the world.

Shall any volunteer organization be interested in my skills, please
contact me at bedottor@usa.net and I will be happy to forward my CV
and see what can be done together. Moreover, shall anybody know an
organization/ project where my skills could be of any help, (s)he is

=========================================================================
Oleg Kharkhordin, of the European University at St. Petersburg (EUSP) has

Studies (IMARS) Program at EUSP. I am forwarding the letter from the
EUSP Executive Director, Alexei Vassiliev, as received. List members may
be interested to know that the program has added classes on political
economy of transitions (taught by Peter Rutland, from Wesleyan), and on
privatization (taught by Professor Alexander Bukhvalov). Please direct
inquiries to the contact noted at the end of the announcement

International MA in Russian Studies, EUSP
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Colleagues

In the past you may have come across our information regarding the Inter-
national MA in Russian Studies (IMARS) program at the European University
at St. Petersburg. If you already had an opportunity to draw the
attention of any of your students to the IMARS program, we would like to
remind them that the officially posted application deadline is March 31,
1999.

All our applicants should allow at least three weeks delivery time to
Russia using regular mail. It is advisable, however, that being this
close in time to the deadline applicants chose FedEx or another express
carrier that ensures timely delivery; or send us a letter of intent via
email addressed to imars@eu.spb.ru stating that the application was mailed
prior to March 31.

If you hear about the IMARS program for the first time, it is still not
too late to recommend it to your students even now, provided they use DHL
or FedEx for application submission.

With this letter we considered appropriate to include a piece of IMARS
current information.

IMARS NEWS IN BRIEF

* The program is successfully approaching the conclusion of its first
academic year. IMARS students are still working through their midterms,
but the Faculty is confident that the first scope of MA degrees in
Political Science and Sociology will be awarded at the Commencement
  Ceremony on June 25, 1999.
* IMARS international students along with their Russian counterparts
have organized a Student Conference, ready to launch on March 13, 1999.
During this event MA students of the European University as well as
several other schools in the region will present their academic work in
progress and exchange opinions on current Russian politics. The two
issues are posted as the main themes for the Conference: Anti-crisis
Policy of the Russian Government and Results of St. Petersburg Local
Elections. European University has offered its support in publishing
participants' abstracts. The publication is scheduled to come out by
  Graduation '99.
* The practical side of life in Russia has never been so invitingly
easy for an international scholar since foreign currencies are gaining
weight. Luxury apartments in St. Petersburg are becoming affordable
even at the graduate student budget; the list of the "student diners"
also expands to include more and more fashionable places.

IMARS PROSPECTIVE FOR 1999-2000

* 1999-2000 academic year at IMARS promises to be indeed fascinating.
The program offers a wider variety of courses in the fields of Political
Sciences and Sociology. In addition to this, courses will be offered in
History, Economics, Literature, Ethnology, and Art History.
* Spending the school year of 1999-2000 IMARS students will have a
unique opportunity to follow the changes of the Russian democracy
through the 1999 parliamentary elections and witness the first post-
Perestroika Russian President elected in 2000. The distinguished
faculty will offer the first-hand expert analysis of the on-going social
  and political developments in Russia.
* IMARS is broadening its geography. The program currently has students
from the US, Sweden, and Finland. In 1999-2000 students from Canada,
Germany, and France are also expected to join the program.
* 1999-2000 will be the first year when IMARS will admit advanced
undergraduate students to the specially designed Certificate program.
* IMARS Administration reached an agreement with the American Medical
Center at St. Petersburg, according to which all international students
will continue to receive the first-class AMC medical coverage at a new
  discount rate.

Once again, we consider IMARS program to be is an excellent way to spend
a semester or a year in St. Petersburg studying social sciences in
conjunction with intensive Russian language classes. IMARS Administration
continues to ensure that the program is academically beneficial as well
as personally enjoyable to all of our international participants. We
deeply appreciate you recommending our program to your students.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me
directly.

Sincerely,

Alexei A. Vassiliev, Executive Director, IMARS
