Hi! About a year ago I began corresponding with a wonderful Russian woman
by e-mail after I posted on this site. We are still corresponding, and I
would like to begin corresponding with other Russian women, too, especially
other women around my age. I'm 37, single and live on the east coast of
the U.S. I'm interested in international politics, animals, books, movies
-- the usual things. I am learning Russian, but my computer only posts in
English right now. Please write!

I see an awful lot of messages on here related to people who cant get in
touch with friends or relative in the former CIS and thought I would let
you all know about a site that economically sends telegrams in the former
CIS.

I don't have any commercial interest in the site, but, I've used it once
about a year ago and everything went through on time.
Have fun.

Greetings to all
Since 1992 I have been taking friends and acquaintances with me for specially
arranged tours in Russia and Ukraine. I am retired Russian history teacher.
Last summer I joined a tour arranged annually by International Fine Arts
Institute in Milwaukee that takes American musical groups for 2 weeks on Volga
giving concerts for Russian Ministry of Culture. In addition we had private
tour of Moscow and St Petersburg for 7 more days. This was so fine an
experience to see Russia that I have been asked by other friends to repeat.
The tour will be 1-22 July departing and returning from Washington DC. but of
course participants can fly from any other city. Anyone interested please
contact me at johns426@aol.com
Anyone interested in Russia and especially Russian history might like to look
at the web site http://members.aol.com/johns426/xenophon.htm at which photos
from previous trips and much text on Russian history are being presented.
very best wishes

Subject: Seek Russian Speaking Correspondent
I would like to correspond with someone in Russia or the Ukraine who is
close to my age and shares my interests. I am 64 years old and a retired
administrator (Registrar) from a college/university. I am interested in
reading (mostly fiction), writing fiction, religion (I have an unusual
background in religion: Presbyterian and Unitarian), music (I sing in a
church choir), tennis, golf, computers, and photography.
I studied Russian in college and the army but have forgotten most of it;
although, I have been studying on my own since 1991. When I can afford it,
I would like to travel to Russia and the Ukraine and study for a month or
more, or work there as a volunteer for several months.
I look forward to hearing from someone.

public access sites in Russia at

Friends of mine used to have a large black dog called Malish [little one]
because he was given to them as a puppy with the words 'you can have the
little one if you like' and then he grew. He only understood Russian which
resulted in my once, when baby and dog-sitting, being left instructions that
if Malish showed any desire to run down the garden path to threaten a
passing dog i shoul shout at the top of my voice, 'Malish, nilzya huff huff
huff'. It worked but I can tell you that one feels very silly on an
English housing estate under these circumstances. My own collie at the
time was bilingual as she copied all Malish's commands. A friend who went
on a trip to Moscow arrived there and, trying to summon some words of
Russian, realised that all she could say was, 'Dai lapu' give me a paw.
She felt it better not to approach Muscovites in this fashion for fear of
being seen as a lunatic. Daf [web page- www.meirionnydd.force9.co.uk]

Dear Friends and Partners:
I would greatly appreciate your help in broadcasting the following
announcement.
Thank you very much.
Best wishes,

The World Bank
________________________________________
The Development Forum (http://www.worldbank.org/devforum/) is a public
venue for online discussions on development issues sponsored by the World
Bank and its partners on behalf of the entire development community. Its
focal point is a series of new and ongoing moderated electronic discussions
on key issues and challenges facing the development community and the
world's poor, with a particular emphasis on learning from the experience of
those who face these challenges in their daily lives.
Discussions in the Development Forum are open to participants from around
the world. In order to assure that those with limited Internet access can
participate, these dialogues are conducted by means of moderated email
lists, archived to the Development Forum website. Participants with web
access, however, will be able to send or reply to messages using the
website.
We are pleased to announce that the following online discussions will be
launched on February 1, 1999 (the discussions will last between two and
three months).
* Attacking Poverty (WDR2001)
This list invites the public, for the first time, to contribute its
knowledge, experiences, and questions to the World Development Report
2000/01 on poverty, which is currently in the early stages of preparation.
The report outline will be available in English, Spanish, and French on the
Forum website and participants will be able to send messages in all three
languages.
* Les conséquences de la maternité précoce sur l'éducation des filles
(EDUC-FILLES)
Co-sponsored by l?AUPELF-UREF (Agence francophone pour l?enseignement
supérieur et la recherche) This list, in French, will examine the related
issues of pregnancy and education among teenage girls, particularly in
Africa.
* Knowledge and Information for Development (IKD)
Co-sponsored by the Panos Institute London
This list will discuss the role of information and knowledge as tools of
sustainable development, and the challenges facing developing countries in
seeking to join the global information economy. It takes as its point of
departure the recent World Bank World Development Report on Knowledge for
Development and the series of Panos Institute articles responding to that
Report.
* Gender and Law (GENDER-LAW)
This list will examine what the World Bank's role should be in the
important legal issues affecting women in developing countries and attempt
to improve understanding of how the law can be used to improve gender
equity.
Although these discussions will not begin until February 1, we invite you
to subscribe now to any or all of these lists. All you need is an email
account.
To subscribe, please send a message (do not enter a subject) to:
MAJORDOMO@JAZZ.WORLDBANK.ORG
In the body of the message, type:
SUBSCRIBE WDR2001
(if you want to join the list on Attacking Poverty)
SUBSCRIBE EDUC-FILLES
(if you want to join the list in French on education and teenage pregnancy in
Africa)
SUBSCRIBE IKD
(if you want to join the list on Knowledge and Information for Development)
SUBSCRIBE GENDER-LAW
(if you want to join the list on Gender and Law)
For each dialogue you subscribe to, you will receive a welcome message with
instructions on how to post messages, unsubscribe, etc. The discussions
will then be officially launched on February 1 with an opening message from
the moderators. The moderators will prepare weekly summaries of the
discussion as well as a final summary -- which will be distributed to all
list members and posted on the website.
If you do not subscribe, you will still be able to read the messages at the
Development Forum website, but you will not be able to send messages
without first subscribing to the list.
We hope you will be able to join us. Please feel free to distribute this
announcement as widely as possible to friends and colleagues who might be
interested in participating. We particularly invite cross-posting of this
message to other lists. Please contact DEVFORUM@WORLDBANK.ORG if you have
any questions.
