WHAT'S NEW . . .

* Many thanks to Ellee Margileth who has put together a page on F&P
entitled "Thanksgiving: An American Holiday". Today (Thursday, November
   26) is special holiday in the U.S.) From the new page:

Celebrated in the USA on the fourth Thursday of November, this
national holiday originated in the 1600's. Although there are
different versions of exactly how this day became a tradition, there
is no doubt that it is a time to give thanks for what we have - as
individuals, as families and as a nation.

Usually celebrated with family members and friends, the modern day
Thanksgiving is thought of by many to be a day of feasting on good
food (including the traditional turkey with stuffing), the Macy's
Thanksgiving Day Parade on the television in the morning and football
in the afternoon, good conversation and an overall feeling of
   well-being and gratitude.

Below we have listed some of the many, many resources on the WWW about
   this annual, historical celebration.

Please visit from the "Life in America" page (from "Life" section) or
   directly at URL:

Hi All,

Interesting site. Have friends who are trying to adopt 5 year old Russian
boy and girl from orphanages in Irkutsk. The boy needs orthopedic help
which has already been arranged in US. They are having a problem getting
the little girl out of a hospital in Irkutsk. She has some kind of rash,
which is treatable here in US by prescription medication, but is
unavailable in Irkutsk. Adoption cannot go forward until she is out of
hospital there. How do we send medicine to a hospital in Irkutsk? Any
help would be appreciated.

Thanks and Balshoya Spaceeba!

HAVE YOU BEEN TO RUSSIA, OR PLANNING A TRIP TO RUSSIA?

After my trip to Russia this past summer, I relived the journey all
over again and got to share my experiences with others when I
assembled the "My Russian Adventure" website on the Friends & Partners
server. Since completing the site I've heard from many others who have
either been to Russia or are planning a trip soon. Sometimes they
asked for advice, or just wanted to share notes and ideas.
It was these communications that made me realize there sure are a lot
of us out there who have had the priviledge to experience this
wonderful country. For this reason I am offering to post web pages
detailing your experiences in Russia in a new section of "My Russian
Adventure", called "Our Russian Adventures."
It is my hope that the site will be more complete, and a better
representation of Russia if the insights and commentary come from many
of us, instead of just me.
All you have to do is send me the text (on a PC formatted floppy disk
in plain ascii) and your photos to scan, and I'll do the rest. I can
return your photos to you if you want, but if you'd rather not risk
parting with them, and I certainly understand, then you are free to
scan them yourself in jpeg format and include them on the floppy with
your text.
Contact me by email if you're interesting in contributing to "Our
Russian Adventures". I'm looking forward to sharing our experiences!

RE: FSAFLEX Pool of Potential Interns
DT: Nov. 20, 1997

We would like to offer your company or organization the opportunity of
advertising summer internships to a pool of qualified, energetic young
applicants. We represent the Freedom Support Act Future Leaders Exchange
(FSAFLEX), a U.S. government- sponsored exchange program. Participants in
this program study in U.S. high schools and live with American host
families for one year. Our alumni office works with the returnees of this
program, over 5000 total from all over the NIS. As the program has been in
existence for over 4 years, many of the returnees are third and fourth year
college students. The alumni are fluent in English, highly motivated, and
eager to gain professional experience. An internship at your
firm/organization could provide them with much needed skills and
credentials, while bringing fresh energy and a young perspective to your
office in a time when you may need extra help due to staff vacations.

If you are interested in hosting FSAFLEX interns at your organization and
are able to provide a substantive work experience for them, please fill out
the form included below. We are currently preparing a list of companies
and organizations with available intern positions to be printed and sent
out with the spring issue of The Bradley Herald, a newsletter for FSAFLEX
alumni that is edited by our office. Interested alumni will send their
resumes and cover letters to you directly; our office is simply providing
them with a list of potential employers.

While our office is concentrating on finding internships in Moscow, we have
alumni in every large city of the NIS. If you can offer positions in other
cities, please let our office know that as well.

We look forward to receiving your replies!

Hi ,

My name is Charlemagne Delaporte, I am living in Paris (France), working
as a consultant.

I am looking forward to spend a long journey (8 month) travelling in Europe
and Asia, but I am mostly fascinated by Siberia, and the wild north. As
you imagine, I would be very much interested if you could give me a few
pieces of advice, or if you know some people that would like to discuss
with me about that, and perhaps I could meet them during my long journey.

I am looking for some basical information like:
- is it difficult to get visa to travel across ex-USSR ?
- what is the best way to carry money (which credit cards are accepted,
which traveller cheques, how long does it take...) ?
- how long do you have to travel to find gas stations in Siberia ?

If you are looking for information about France or western Europe, or any
other kind of request, I would be glad to help you.

Hope to ear from you
Regards
Charlemagne

Subject: Bring your alcoholism treatment experience to Ukraine

First Light Partners of Eugene Oregon, and Kiev Ukraine is involved in
training programs for health care professionals in Ukraine who are
struggling to address the problem of rampant untreated and mistreated
alcoholism. Our only goal is to help these men and women of Ukraine learn
and implement 12-step based treatment methods into their facilities. We
have complete support and cooperation from all levels of the Ukrainian
health care system from the Ministry on down. Our success has been
phenomenal.

We are currently looking for several quasi-volunteers (we supply
transportation, housing and living expenses) who are interested in bringing
new hope and alcoholism treatment methodology to Ukraine. We blend both
personal and professional experience into our teams of trainers. Language
skills are a plus but not required. If you are interested in participating
in our next program, which will run from approximately June 1998 through
mid-September 1998, we would like to hear from you. Personal recovery
experience, a professional treatment background, or a blend of both is
essential.

We will be happy to talk to you about this opportunity to help change the
face of recovery in Ukraine forever. But, we would first appreciate a
brief letter explaining why you are interested in this endeavor, and what
you think you can bring to the situation. We can be reached at First Light
Partners, 2680 McMillan Street, Eugene, Oregon, 97405 USA. Our e-mail

If you happen to have any links to other pages of mine on your "Friends
and Partners" web site with "copper.ucs." or "ezinfo.ucs." in the URL,
please change that string to "php." My main page is listed below.

By the way, I have a Russian Classical music page at this URL:

Thanks.

Subject: Russian course book

Privet!

Could anyone assist me with information about a Russian language course
book, recently published in the USA (I believe in 1996, possibly by one of
the university presses) called "Mir Russkikh" (exact title not known,
possibly The Russian's World, in English). The only other information I
have is that one of the authors is T. Stramnova.

Thanks for any information.
