Digest for 97-05-27

Dear friends,

We wanted to let you know about the latest Friends and Partners project --
focused on promoting better understanding and new relationships with
friends in China. We will have a preliminary launch of this new service
tomorrow (Wednesday, May 28) at 10:00 am (EST). Prior to the official
launch, Natasha and I wanted to give some advance notice to the F&P
community with whom we have worked for over 3 years now. You can visit the
new server at the following URL:

   http://www.friends-partners.org/fpchina/ and
   http://alice.ibpm.serpukhov.su/fpchina/

F&P China is brand new and has a lot of 'growing up' to do. It currently
offers a catalog of Internet resources related to China -- as well as a few
databases, and communications services. As was Friends and Partners 3
years ago, it is primarily a "framework" on which we hope to help others
build and manage helpful services.

This new project was begun in response to interest expressed by friends in
China and the US to help introduce people in our countries. It was made
possible by the helpful support and encouragement of Dr. Rongsheng Xu of
Beijing - and the determined efforts of Drs. Michael Lusk and Ge Zhang of
the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

We hope you will visit, sign the guestbook, join the new FPCHINA email
listserver, and let us know your thoughts about this latest member of the
F&P family. Also, we would like to extend special invitation to join us at
the special launch ceremony being held tomorrow (Wednesday) morning at
10:00 EST. The ceremony is being held at The University of Tennessee in
honor of the visit of Professor Qu GePing, founder of the Chinese National
Environmental Protection Agency and a senior statesman of environment
issues for developing nations. We will have an on-line chat session from
10:00 - 11:30 am (EST) at URL:

   http://www.friends-partners.org/fpchina/chat/index.html

We so hope you can 'tune in' and participate in the on-line conversation --
we will save a transcript of the session with everyone's comments as part
of our "opening day" material for the server.

Please join us in welcoming new friends from China to Friends and Partners!

I came across your information on Internet. I think it's very important
for both countries to learn more about each other's cultures, learn more
about people. I am myself a Russian exchange student at Utica College of
Syracuse University, NY. My name is Victoria. I have been here since
August, and I love this place, especially people. I would like to
stay here for one more year to complete my degree, but my problem is
finance. The College is willing to pay half of tuition for me, but still
I need $7,500. The school has a very good English program (my major is
English and Psychology). Please, if you could give me some inforamtion
about sources (companies, organizations, or people), competitions or
scholarships, that will be of a great help for me. Sorry for any trouble
I might have caused.

Thank you very much,
Victoria

My name is Iouri Rostov. I spent half of my life in Russia and half in
America. So, probably, it is especially clear for me why what you are doing
is important. For about five months now I participate in several "Friends
and Partners" mailing lists, which I find very useful.

Recently my friends in Russia asked me to introduce to the American market
"Russian Daily Business Digest" which is currently rather popular in Moscow
and has subscribers in Europe.

"Russian Daily Business Digest" is being issued for English speaking
businessmen. Digest is covering virtually every business related article in
65 Russian newspapers. It is issued in English. It is published every day
Monday through Friday. I think that this information could be regarded as
valuable for Friends and Partners subscribers.

I have just launched a web site where the Russian Digest could be assessed
at no pay. After the initial period of marketing I plan to leave a lot of
information from Russian Digest free. On the same site.

I invite you to visit my site at http://www2.netcom.com/~irost . If you
think that Russian Digest could be of interest to Friend and Partners, I
would appreciate a link to it and a description of Russian Digest in Friend
and Partners business section.

Thank you very much. Iouri Rostov

Sender: Flp3@aol.com
Subject: Alcoholism treatment and training opportunity in Ukraine

First Light Partners - "Zarya", a US nonprofit organization is looking for a
few individuals or couples to be involved in a very exciting project.

Throughout Ukraine, nearly 100% of the people seeking relief from the ravages
of mistreated and untreated alcoholism show up at the doors of existing
treatment centers. Sadly, archaic ideas and a lack of 12-step based
self-help treatment methods means that virtually none of the tens of
thousands who seek treatment each year can ever hope to recover. To be an
alcoholic in Ukraine today is to die. Today, professionals and the country
itself stand at a turning point. The motivation is there and the
infrastructure is in place, yet they lack the basic resources and information
that could change the situation forever.

In cooperation with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Academy of Sciences
and others, we have designed a modern, relevant training program and
accompanying treatment model. We have implemented a series a intensive
hands-on training programs for health care professionals working to confront
the disease of alcoholism. The change is systemic--the project finite--the
results permanent.

The second of these programs will begin in late 1997 or possibly early 1998,
and will last approximately four months. We are looking for a few well
qualified people who can convey the essentials of our well-designed,
culturally applicable training and treatment model. They will be instructing
approximately 30 dedicated and very well educated health care professionals
whose lives are dedicated to treating the disease of alcoholism.

Our "volunteers" will receive airfare, visas (they need to secure a
passport), housing, and a stipend for food and pleasure. They need not speak
Russian or Ukrainian but it might be a plus if they are otherwise the best
available. We would prefer that they be in recovery personally for several
very good reasons, not the least of which is we must continuously make an
effort to humanize the disease and to provide some "living" proof as it
were. Volunteers will receive one week of specific training about our model
and Ukraine. It is essential that they understand the nature of the project,
and the vital importance of consistency in our training approach and model.

Interested men and women can contact me; Ted Hicks, by writing to First Light
Partners, 2680 McMillan Street, Eugene, OR 97405. Our phone number is
(541)341-6447. We would like those who are interested to send along a one or
two page letter explaining why they want to make this contribution, and a
short resume.
