Hello everybody,
I am one of the lucky winners of this year's Green Card lottery, and now I

Questions:
Do I have to register somewhere when entering the US?
I will have to leave after two months in order to finish my university,
this will be for approximately one year, will there be any problems?
My husband (also holder) is a Russian citizen. Is there anything that
he should consider? (I'm German citizen).
Again, your help would very much be appreciated! In exchange, I could offer
to give similar information to those who want to come to Germany...
Thank you!

From: Stepashkin[FAX:+1 (915) 5983927]

Dear friends,
My name is Slava Stepashkin and I would like to share with you my experience
of participating in two major projects in Russia last summer.
In May and July ,1996 I participated, as head interpreter, in two major
tour-related projects in Russia organized by the Wisconsin-based International
Fine Arts Institute which is in the business of taking American performing
groups on a tour of Russia.( Fax:414-2844221, phone:4142843263)
The first project was the performances of the Coronado High School Marching
BAnd from El Paso, Texas in Moscow including three performances in Red Square
on May 9, Victory Day, which is the most sacred day for the Russians plus
their highly successful performances at the famous Tchaikovsky Concert Hall,
the venue of the famous Tchaikovsky piano competitions. As as the head
interpreter, I can testify that this was one of the most memorable projects in
my life I have worked in tourism for six years hosting largerly American
groups), it was a lifetime chance for the kids from El Paso to perform in most
treasured venues and performing stages of Russia, the venues that normally
serve Russian and world music celebrities. The most astounding was in my view
was their participation in the Victory Parade as part of the premier bands
column of the Russian defense ministry and participation in the evening
performance in Red Square that drew the crowd of some 300,000.
At the same time, the organizers took good care of the parents, relatives and
sponsors of the Band. They have been assigned a special bus #5 along with
their own guides and sightseeing programme. At certain points the itineraries
of the band members and parents did cross but largerly the bus #5 enjoyed the
luxury of seeing the best sights of Moscow including the visit to the Moscow
Kremlin, Tretyakov gallery , Poklonnaya Gora War Memorial Museum, just to name
a few plus brilliant performances of the famous Moscow circus and Moiseyev
Dance Company. The city of El Paso could witness every day on their NBC news
channel 9 the daily coverage of the visit.
My second project with the performers was in July when the IFAI put four U.S.
performing groups on the cruise down the Volga river and those groups
performed in old Russian cities many of which are older than Moscow. The
reception in those cities was astounding , the people there are very warm,
kind and hospitable.
The performing groups included the Moorhouse College Choir, the best
Afro-American choir, and the CAll for Peace Dance group which features the
dances of the nations of the world including native American Indians. You can
only imagine the treamendous interest that the Russian people displayed to see
native Indians considering the fact that previously they only read about them
in Cooper's books and saw them in motion pictures produced in East Germany in
which starring was an actor from Yugoslavia.
At the same time, while the performers were doing their jobs their support
teams enjoyed the wonderful sightseeing of those old Russian cities like
Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Nizhny Novgorod and etc. Aboard the cruiseline Shalyapin
activities were also abundant including briefings in the current Russian
affairs( the cruise took places in between two rounds of the Russian
presidential elections), performances by the artists hired to entertain the
guests. While the itinerary was augmented with visits to a famous watch
factory in the city of Uglich where the guests could inexpensively buy dozens
of watches, arrangement of the sale of unique local crafts and socializing
with the local people.
This year I am expected to participate in seven of the Institute's projects
and the cruise will also be there.
The IFAI enjoys special relationship with the Russian Ministry of Culture what
makes it possible to make arrangements for special unique events and
sightseeing. For example, the Coronado high school band enjoyed the attention
of the a fully fledged professional company.
Despite of the fact that the Institute is in the business of taking performing
groups to Russia , they do welcome non-performing guests who do enjoy their
special itinerary and special attention of the organizers.
And I will definitely recommend a trip with IFAI.
Please, feel free to ask me any questions.
Sincerely,
Slava Stepashkin

Firstly, I would like introduce to myself. My name is Ahmet Abidin Ozbek
from Turkey and I've been still continued to my Ph.D. by sponsorships
of NATO and TUBITAK (Turkish High Scientific And Technological Research
Council) organisations.
Especially, I have been dealt with documentation and methodological
steps in my Ph.D.thesis object. I have selected to my region from the
southern part of Turkeys Mediterranean. I am very dealing with to
acquire the principals and applications of landscape ecology and remote
sensing integration. I think my field is a very new in Turkey specially
for seeing to landscape degradation for both natural (ecologically
sensitive biotopes) and cultural landscape (archaeological zone,
historic monuments) and local- heritages problems in the same field.
In details, I would like to study on very limited area (between the 50
or 100 km square) in the region Especially, I need to see the how the
existence land use activities are (agriculture, tourism-recreation,
transportation) effecting to landscape heritage patterns and patches
between the 1987 and 1997 or the landscape change in the same pattern.
This is very general definition of What I am wanting to do in field
Mediterranean zone).
But, also I have some special aims that are related to main theme. One
of them are the property of landscape pattern, size, density of
activities,..etc are very important factors in landscape change. Also,
I'm interested in to specify on these factors (size, density,
situation, property) for improving landscape matrix studies in the
field. Also, I hope I can be able to use LANDSAT TM or SPOT images for
improving my landscape matrix composition.
I would like to execute to some of my studies in Europe/ USA only for
two or three months that will specify on to improve methodological part
of my doctoral studies which is dealing with holistically landscape
ecological approaches in detailed survey of study in the Mediterranean.
In this context, I believe that I can address some landscape
ecological projects between Turkey and Spain.
Overall, I have no any idea or any special data about to my project
idea is applicaple or not in NATO. Please, If you have any available
information or to fund the project, could you inform me.
At the present, as many thank for yours considerations.
