Subject: New Resources

Greetings Everyone!
I'm pleased to announce a new website that we hope people who are
interested in Russian history, literature, and culture will find useful.

Verdant House Publishing has posted a bilingual website which can be seen
at;

http://www.verdant.com/~macmac/verdant.html
(english version)

or

http://www.verdant.com/~macmac/verdant.rus.html
(russian version)

We have been working on several projects for some time now. Our biggest
effort, to date, is preparing a book for printing about the Imperial Page
Corps. Housed in the famous Vorontsov Palace, in St. Peterburg, the Page
Corps prepared young men for service in the court of the czar. Many
famous and talented persons graduated from this institution, which will
be celebrating it's 200th anniversary soon.

Here, you will find some photographs, descriptions of some of the
graduates, and a chapter from the upcoming book. Check it out!

In other news;

Verdant House has made available, through generous cooperation with
Friends & Partners, a resource that we hope will be useful for teachers
in Russia who are looking for materials online to use for teaching
English to native Russian speakers.

We have prepared a 300+ page book for presentation on the web. You can
see it at:

http://www.friends-partners.org/friends/dmcadam/eflo/index.html
(english introduction text)

or

http://www.friends-partners.org/friends/dmcadam/eflo/index.rus.html
(russian introduction text)

This material is made available free of charge and everyone is welcome to
use it. We have also prepared this material in compressed file format for
downloading to IBM or Macintosh type machines. We hope to find a place
to put these files so they can be downloaded via FTP. The files are quite
large (7.5 MB compressed for the mac version and 5.5 MB for the IBM
version).

The best way to use this material would be to save it to your local
system and use Netscape or Internet Explorer to view it offline.

We will be happy to transmit these files to anyone who can receive them.

We prepared this project with the idea that our friends at Project
Harmony might find it useful. If anyone involved with Project Harmony
reads this, please contact us.

Come and visit! Let us know what you think.

Hello,

Where can I find information about Cyrillic OCR (Optical Character
Recognition) software, preferably free or cheap (with a student
discount, etc.)? Or, would anyone who has such software be
willing to use it occasionally to help me scan in Russian poems,
songs and literature for a web site? Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: INFO-RUSS: a message to post

(X-POST from INFO-RUSS)

Dear INFO-RUSSers!

A friend of mine is going to visit Russia this coming July. His point of
destination is Solovki, but not the monastery itself. He is
primarily interested in seeing the famous ancient and mysterious
labirynths situated mostly on islands Anzer, Bolshoj Zayatski and maybe
Muksalma.

This is what I concider a potential problem for him and his wife (the are
going to travel together). I have no doubt they can happily reach Archangel
and then the Solovetsky Archipelago. But they might have troubles trying
to hire somebody who can help them to reach remote spots of the area. He
barely speaks Russian (or is supposed to speak barely by July), but he is
really determined to see these labyrynths (there are 33 of them in total on
the islands).

Hence the question to the fellow INFO-RUSSers: who can help?

Please respond with any hints, tips, references, advice or maybe even
offers of help on spot from somebody's friends/relatives/friends-of-friends
etc.

Anything of this sort would be greatly appreciated.

Zaranee blagodaren.

Subject: information about Kazakhstan

Hello,
I am a graduate student in Montana, USA. My second assignment is to
write a paper pretending that I represent a company that is considering
doing business in a foreign country. I picked Kazakhstan. I have found
a lot of information in the BISNIS home page, etc. I was wondering if
it would be possible to get any of the questions below answered or get
some direction as where I might find help on the internet.
The core of the assignment is to study the customs, culture and
communication style to make recommendations to the ficticious company
management. I know there are a lot of questions but if you have any
answers to any of them I would appreciate it. I'm under a time crunch
and have until next week to finish the paper.

"General beliefs and attitudes
1. what are the predominant religious influences?
2. what are the holidays?
3. what is the attitude toward age?
4. what is the attitude toward individualism?

Orientation toward time
1. how important is tradition?
2. what are the working hours?
3. how are appointments viewed?

Goals and status
1. what is the attitude toward status?
2. how is status displayed?
3. what are goals considered to be worth working for?
4. what is the attitude toward work?

Business relationships
1. what is the attitude toward socializing with business associates?
2. what is the attitude toward women in business?
3. what is the attitude toward gift-giving?
4. what is the attitude toward privacy?

negotiations
1. what is the attitude toward agreements?
2. how are negotiations conducted?
3. how long might negotiations take?

social customs
1. what are some customs related to lunch and dinner invitations?
2. should a guest bring a gift?
3. what are appropriate greetings?
4. what may be properly discussed?
5. what is the attitude toward talking about or showing feelings?
6. what are proper physical distances?
7. what gestures are to be avoided?"

Thank you for your time.
