Subject: Info on city in Russia

I'm not sure if I should be writing here for information and if not I'm
sorry and you can disregard this note. Both my grandparents (now
deceased) on my fathers side came from a city or town called Schaeffer,
Russia. I've always been interested in someday visiting Russia and
seeing the place and area where my family came from. The thing that
really interests me is that I have found out from other relatives that
my grandmother from Schaeffer left family there when she came to the
U.S. My question is can anyone help me find where Schaeffer, Russia is?
I'd greatly appreciate any help I could get. Also if there are no
objections, how could I find someone to Email back and forth to in
Russia? Thanks again. Any info can be Emailed me.

Subject: Travel Sites

To whom it may concern:

Academservice Ltd., a leading Russian tour operator, has recently started
its own www-site (http://www.acase.ru). We hope to develop it into a huge
travel resource for incoming and outgoing travellers which would contain
various cultural and travel information as well as hotel and travel
catologues for Russian and international tourists. Currently this site
hosts probably the largest web database of hotels in Russia, the CIS and
the Baltics.

We view Friends and Partners site as the one successfully representing
Russia to the world Internet community and think that listing our site with
you would be invaluable for us. With this view we would like to ask you to
consider the inclusion of our site into your Travel category.

On our side we would be glad to host a link to your site.

We would be thankful if you could answer as soon as possible.

Subject: Vologda

I'd just like to say that I have been using Friends for a few years now
and I have continuously enjoyed the mailings and the services provided.

I am a senior in Russian language and I spent last year studying abroad
in Vologda, Russia. I am hoping to have some reason to go back there
after graduation in May, but I have been unable to locate anyone even
vaguely interested in Vologda.

I was hoping that someone could help me find information about Vologda
and tell me if any foreign companies are interested in going that
direction.

Thanks for your help!!!

Sincerely,
Justine Hamilton

Sender: David Stickney (david@wvb.gomel.by)
Subject: WOW

One for the linguists on the list.

In the last year or so I have been hearing "WOW" over and over from people
that don't speak English. The word WOW has made it's way into the Russian
language, but with some differences. Wow has a different meaning in
Russian, where as in English you might say Wow, That's Great, in Russian,
Wow would be used more like "Wow, that's bad" For those who speak Russian,
WOW is used like "Oy", "UX" perhaps "Foo".

As the word is becoming more widely used, eventually it will need to be
written, and since it is pronounced exactly as it is in English ( with
sound W not V ), and there is no W in Russian, there is no real solution
for it's spelling. Word Perfect tried to make the w sound with the
Russian letters U' and O (yopD) , but it reads much differently.

Nobody is responsible for anything. You must pay any taxes required by the
US Government, State or Local Authorities. The Real Value of the rubles are
approx. .0002ths of a Kopeck, which doesn't even translate to dollars so
don't try. You may have rights which vary from state to state, pay a
lawyer $300 an hour to learn more. You can help Friends and Partners make
