One of our classrooms is part of the Peace Corps "World Wise Schools"
program. Their 'partner school' is near Vladavostok. I was looking for
other sites to add to the list of places the students could visit while we
learn more about our penpals. Nice site, we will visit again !

Political differences? The more I associate with foreigners, especially
Russians, more fully do I realize that the differences are unimportant and
that the important things are the same. I feel that the Russian is a better
citizen and a better family man as compared to the US citizen. We are fools
ever again to let our bureaucrates lead us into discord. With comunication,
trade, free enterprise, and closer association We will all come to
understand one another. But we should think seriously about reducing or
eliminating all the misguided politicians if ever they again lie to us and
lead us to the brink of war. If only we can eliminate terrorism and bad
politics from our planet, this will indeed be a wonderful earth to live on.
good luck and happy landings....marcus.

Subject: from Natalia Kouzniak (fwd)
Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is Natalia Kouzniak. I am an expert in the field of fracture
mechanics, Ukrainian scientist, working now at Technical University
Vienna.
My paper is accepted for oral presentation at the 9th International
Conference on Fracture Mechanics to be held in Sydney, 1-5 April. I was
a secretary of the organizing committee of the previous, 8th Conference,
which was held in Kiev, capital of Ukraine, in 1993.
I am the author/co-author of 35 scientific papers, participated in many
international and European conferences related to fracture mechanics
topics.
Unfortunatly, the funding obtained on the side of Austrian Scientific
Foundation can cover only the airplane ticket.
Could you please advise on the possibility to find cheap accomodation in
Sydney on 31.03.-5.04. as well as on the routes/accomodation in order to
meet other fracture mechanics specialists in Australia, as well as young
Ukrainians and Russians.
Thank you in advance.
With best regards,
Dr. N. Kouzniak

Subject: Kamchatka TV station seeks partners
February 25, 1997
A small television station in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski is interested
in forming a relationship with similar TV stations in Alaska or
on the West coast. One idea they have is to create programs about their
region and to exchange them for similar regional programs with a US
TV station. Potential topics: environmental problems, elections,
education, etc. They're open to other ideas for exchange and
communication as well.
They have no email, so any interested parties can contact me at:
Allegra@actr.marine.su and I will pass along your information.

Subject: regulating birth rates by mandatory abortion???
I heard a bizzar story the other day from someone in Missouri.
They say that a small town North of St. Petersburg, Russia, is regulating
birth rates by mandatory abortion not to exceed the number of births over
1,000. An example of a lady who has had 13 abortions and was crying telling
Americans about it -- she wants to have a baby.
Would this sound credible? I am not fully with this.
PLEASE, REPLY OFF THE LIST.

Subject: Vladivostok School #14
Thanks to everyone who inquired about teaching at school #14 in
Vladivostok. The school selected a teacher this past fall, and it
doesn't look like the position will open up again. I haven't
heard of any other openings recently, so please cross-post this
"cancellation" to any list or location to which the first
message was posted.
Thanks for your interest.

information printed in the 1997 February-March issue of NSTA Report. I am
a high school biology teacher and also taught in Russia from January to
June, 1996. Although I taught in english, I do understand and speak
Russian. I am interested in the development of internet-based educational
programs involving the United States and Russia. Please relay this
information to someone that may be able to help me on this topic. Thank

Subject: Galleries in Russia
My name is Cindy Humphries, my husband and I are importers of Mata Ortiz
pottery from the village of Mata Ortiz in Chihuahua, Mexico. I am interested
in finding out names and addresses of fine art galleries in Russia (or in
any Eastern European or European country, for that matter) that might be
interested in carrying the pottery.
If you know of any such fine art galleries, could you send me the name
and address so that I can mail them some literature? I would be very
grateful for the information.
By the way - if you want to see what the pottery looks like, there are
a couple of nice pictures at the following website:

Spend summer semester in St.Petersburg, Russia
- Russian Legal Server - Summer Law School In Russia'97 -
"CWRU - CSU Summer Law School '97 in St. Petersburg, Russia"
June 15 - July 15, 1997
Case Western Reserve University's School Of Law and Cleveland State
University's Cleveland-Marshall College of Law invite law students to spend
a month in St.Petersburg, Russia.(p) Prof. Picker, Dir. of our Russian
Legal Studies Pro gram, confirmed the establishment of CWRU's first summer
school program abroad beginning this summer. The fully accredited by ABA
and AALS Summer Law School will be operating in St.Petersburg, Russia June
15 - July 15, 1997.
The program, taught in English, would be operated jointly by CWRU and CSU
Law School, and will run for a 4 week period, followed by 2 days of exams,
Students may receive 6 units of academic credit.
The program must have a minimum of 37 (and a maximum of 50) U.S. law
students for it to operate. In addition, approxi mately 10 English
speaking Russian students will participate.
Both the curriculum and the faculty of the program are particularly
exciting, including as it does major international organization
participation. Courses, credits, faculty, and sched ules, include:
1. Structure & Functions of the World Bank (IBRD) and the In
ternational Monetary Fund (IMF). (3 credits.) In a first
ever opportunity, this course will be taught jointly by William
Holder, the Deputy General Counsel of the IMF, and by
Lester Dally, the Sr. Counsel, Finance, for the World Bank.
(It took special permission of both the Fund and Bank for
this course to be offered.) Holder and Dally (by nationality
an Australian and New Zealander, respectively) were both law
professors before undertaking their present positions.
2. Russian Business Planning With U.S. Comparisons. (3 cred
its.) This newly developed course will be taught by Prof.Musin of
of St.Petersburg University School of Law.
3. Internaitonal Taxation, Focus on Russia-US Transactions (3 credits.)
This course will be taught by Mr. Madden, head of the Tax/legal
division in the Arthur Andersen LLP office in St.Petersburg Russia
4. Selected problems in Internaitonal LAw Affecting Russia.
(3 credits.) This course will be
taught by CWRU Prof. Sidney Picker and CSU Prof. Jane Picker
and will focus on up to four international law problems affecting
Russia.
St. Petersburg: Recently returned to its original name, during the
Communist era St. Petersburg was known as Leningrad and was best known
during this period for the "siege of Leningrad" during World War II. The
city, like Washington, was planned from the ground up by Peter the Great in
the 18th Century as Russia's cap ital, its access to the western ocean, and
its "window to the West." St. Petersburg served as home to Russia's czars
as well as its capital until the Bolshevik Revolution moved it to Moscow.
It is in many ways the most beautiful, imperial and cosmopolitan of Russian
cities and has some of Russia's best known and most famous museums (e.g.,
The Hermitage) and imperial palaces.
Physical Facilities: The summer school will be held in a former Communist
Party Conference facility, which, according to Prof. Picker, means the
structure is well built and maintained. It has security and is a
self-contained entity with modern international standard classrooms,
twin-bedded rooms each with private bath, laundry facilities on each floor,
a small but very pleasant stu dy-library, an inexpensive and attractive
international class cafeteria as well as an alternative optional up-market
dining room, and even a small on-site medical facility to handle emer
gencies.
Location: The building is in suburban St. Petersburg, about a 3 minute
walk from a Metro ("Rapid") stop. St.Petersburg, like Moscow, has an
excellent underground Metro system, and it is a 5 Metro stop trip to the
center of St. Petersburg.
Optional Trips: The program will include periodic afternoon tours of the
judicial, legislative and executive institutions in St. Petersburg.
Optional excursions are also planned for nearby Peterhof (site of Peter the
Great's summer palace) and the vil lage of Pushkin, home of Russia's last
Czar, Nicholas II as well as site the extraordinary Catherine and other
palaces. A weekend excursion to the historic city of Novgorod is also
planned.
Cost: Cost to each student will be $2,930. This includes tui tion, housing
in St. Petersburg (shared room with private bath), and application and
materials fees. (Single rooms may be avail able for an additional $850.)
It does not include meals, al though inexpensive and satisfactory meals are
available within the living facility, cafeteria-style.
For further questions or information, and indications of preliminary
interest, students are again reminded to contact Prof. Picker. (An
indication of interest at this time does not commit you to participate. It
merely gives Prof. Picker additional information to help him plan.(p)
