Friendly greetings from Oregon in America's rainy, but green. northwest.
In July of last year, a trip down the Neva from St. Petersburg to Lake
Ladoga and Lake Onega (Kizhi was wonderful), and down the Volga to Moscow,
was a trip I will never forget. In fact, I want to go back, and would be
interested to hear from anyone in St. Petersburg or Moscow who could
provide to stay, and/or act as a guide. Thanks.

Privyet! I am a third year engineering student at Acadia University,
Wolfville, NS, Canada. I have studied the Russian language for two years
during my stay at Acadia. I have always had a strong interest in learning
Russian, and I would like to have a pen pal who knows how to speak Russian.
I have really enjoyed the "Friends and Partners" web site, because it
showed me how I could make my computer "understand" Russian. For users of
Windows 95 who want to have a Russian standard keyboard configuration, I
found the following site: "Paul's Guide to Cyrillic for Windows 95"

I must hold my breath, a bit as I prepare to make a giant step in my life.
I am a retired American submariner that had to give it up early, due to ill
health.
Arthritis took me at a very early age (22). But I spent several
fascinating years chasing Russian boats. I kept the USS Daniel Boone at
launch depth for a time. Later, I was at the helm of the USS Lapon, and
made certain that your boats didn't go unnoticed!
I am forty-seven years of age, now, and I wouldn't be if I had ever been
given orders to do what we were trained to do. There is a God! We are
still here and so are you. But for one single rash action, we are able to
be of help for each other. We came closer to anhilation than most know.
I understand that Russian people are in desperate straights. Believe it or
not, so are many Americans .
I wish to direct my meager abilities to assist the people of your country,
in a special way. If there is a former submariner that wishes to
correspond with me, I would consider it an honor to know of him.
My intent is to provide specific assistance if I can manage it.

Subject: Humanitarian Aid for Ulan-Ude woman
Dear Friends and Partners,
Around last June, I received a plea from the Ford Foundation in Moscow
to help locate prosthetic legs for a woman in Ulan-Ude (Eastern Siberia)
who is a double amputee. I have been successful in locating a source of
the legs where I live at no cost (including extra legs for spare parts)
to help this woman, but two major obstacles remain:
1) I have been unable to contact this woman. The only information that I
received about her was her name and mailing address, which is a post office
box. Attempts to reach her by mail have failed. If anyone has a contact
in Ulan-Ude who might be able to research her name or find her in a phone
book, I would appreciate it greatly.
A second alternative might be to place an ad in a local newspaper. I would
also appreciate it if anyone could help me with this.
The name and address of this woman are:
Tamara Rinchinovna Yakovleva
p/o 42 p/Ya 6149
Ulan Ude.
Sorry, but no index number was provided.
2) Once I have contacted the woman and gotten the pertinent information
required to get her fitted with the correct legs, it will be necessary to
transport the legs to her. Any information from anyone on financial aid
resources for humanitarian assistance of this nature would be welcome. I
understand that the Department of Defense provides space-available shipping
for such efforts, but it's doubtful that they have anything going in that
direction. Perhaps Aeroflot could help.
Thank you very much in advance for any help on either issue that
you can provide.
Sincerely,
Walter Jacques

with Internet-based automated collaborative tools.
Our strategy and hope is to participate in the cutting edge of the
boundless world of information by bringing our readers and authors together
in the development of the new "global village" offered by Internet
technology. We welcome you to join us in your investigation of Siberian
regions.

Hi!
I found your Friends and Partners site on the web and found it to be quite
interesting. I am Russian living in the States. I am very interested in
Russian news. I was trying to get access to IZVESTIYA newspaper by putting
in required user name and the password, but that's what I saw on the screen:

Dear Reader:
First, I want to congratulate you on a wonderful source of information. This
was an unexpected treat in my attempts at research.
I am working on the music for an IMAX film called "Mission To Myr." We are
interested in using the Vasili Soloviev-Sedoy composition that has been
translated as "Moscow Nights" or "Midnight In Moscow." However, we are
looking to find out some information on Soloviev-Sedoy.
Do you have any suggestions on where we can find 1) the birth and death dates
of Mr. Soloviev-Sedoy and 2) when he wrote the composition.
I would appreciate any and all help that you may provide.
Again, I thank you and congratulations on developing such a terrific site!
Sincerely,
Tony Scudellari

Subject: Azerbaijan
Dear Sir:
I just got back from Azerbaijan. I really had a wonderful time. But one
thing I would like to add is the importance of language and first day of
arrival impacting on the rest of the trip.
I would like to add a tip for would be travelers that is a private
chauffer's name and phone number who speaks English and is recommended
by my contacts at American Embassy in Baku.
Please add to your travel advice for first time travelers to Baku the
name of 'Mr. Rasim Agayev, Tel.# (in Baku) 94-16-97'. When calling from
overseas to Azerbaijan if traveler would call on Sunday and ask for
Elmira, or Monday through Saturday after 5 p.m., He can show up at the
airport with the would be traveler's name printed on a big piece of
paper, get the luggage and hotel room, and then he can show you the
whole city and country and translate for the traveler. This can be all
arranged for a minimal cost. I paid $40/day for the job of translating
and driving around in Baku. I got a first class professional treatment.
