Hello! What a great place to connect with other FSU enthusiasts! Cheers
to Friends and Partners.
I have been to Russia in April 1996. I visited Moscow, St. Petersburg,
and stayed with a wonderful host family in Cherepovets. I'm returning to
my beloved part of the world soon. In February 1997, I will be in Minsk,
Belarus to distribute humanitar- ian aid to the victims of Chernobyl. I'll
meet my good friend Pasha for the first time(we've written to each other
for 4+ years) and deliver boxes to hospitals, orphanages, and other places.
I am nineteen years old, I have loved the former Soviet republics for "I
don't know how many years!" :)

HELLO!
I am a Language Arts teacher in Broward County, Florida, USA. I now
teach 7th graders.
We are now just learning the basics of expository compositions. I would
love to have my students be able to write to some students of another
culture. In addition to being an excellent writing project, I truly
believe that such an activity would broaden students understanding of
other lifestyles.
Please contact me if there is any way we can arrange for an opportunity
for my students to exchange compositions about our different cultures,
etc.

To whom it may concern.
Hello, we live in Florida and we are in the process of adoptiong two special
needs Russian orphan brothers. Right now they are 7 years old and live in a
Russian orphanage or boys' school. We are getting closer to bringing our
"new sons" home to the U.S. but there is still some (lots) of paperwork to
be finalized.
I came across your address while looking for someone who could translate
Russian into English. We are looking for some helpful person to donate
their effort to help us.
We have four short pages of handwritten medical information on the children,
Pasha and Sasha, who we wish to adopt. The information is in Russian and we
need to have it translated. Would you know of anyone whom we could fax
these pages to, who would read and translate them into English for us? One
of the boys is supposed to have a chest defect and we are wondering if there
is more information written in the medical records.

SUMMARY:
The Office of Citizen Exchanges, Russia/Eurasia Division of the United
States Information Agency's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs
announces a competition for an assistance award. Public and private
non-profit organizations meeting the provisions described in IRS regulation
26 CFR 1.501(c)(3)-1 may apply to organize and implement community-based,
professional programs for entrepreneurs, legal professionals and government
officials from Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Belarus, and Georgia.
The objective of Community Connections, the successor to Business for
Russia, is to enhance the participants' skills in business and
entrepreneurship, law, and local governance. USIA is interested in
proposals that provide both professional experience and exposure to
American life and culture through internships hosted by U.S. businesses and
local governmental and legal institutions, and home stays with local
community members. This program is not academic in nature; rather, it is
designed to provide practical, hands-on training in American business,
legal and public sector environments which can be transferred upon an
individual's return home.
Pending availability of funds, it is anticipated that approximately 1,200
professionals will participate in this cycle of the FY 1997-funded
Community Connections program. All participants will be recruited from the
selected regions by experienced U.S. organizations with offices in Russia
and the other previously mentioned countries. It is anticipated that
approximately half of all participants will be from Russia, one third from
Ukraine, and the remainder from Moldova, Armenia, Belarus and Georgia.
In an effort to minimize administrative expenses, organizations are asked
to submit proposals to host no fewer than 30 participants in total.
Organizations must host at least one group of participants each from two of
the three subject components of the program.
Grants awarded to eligible organizations with less than four years of
experience in conducting international exchange programs will be limited to
$60,000.
Programs and projects must conform with Agency requirements and guidelines
outlined in the Solicitation Package (which is available on-line). USIA
projects and programs are subject to the availability of funds.

All copies must be received at the
U.S. Information Agency by 5 p.m. Washington, D.C. time
on Friday, February 28, 1997.
