Digest for 96-12-11

Dear Friends,

We want to point out Dave Stickney's message below in which he proposes
starting a "Friends and Partners FAQ" service to help visitors to F&P find
answers to those questions which come up again and again. We think it is a
great idea and hope that many folks will volunteer to help Dave with what
should become a really useful service.

We have established an email listserver to help with communications. You
are welcome to join by sending a one-line message to:
listproc@solar.rtd.utk.edu
consisting of:

subscribe fpfaq firstname lastname

Many thanks to Dave for his many and continuing contributions to F&P!

Subject: Friends and Partners FAQ

Hi,
I was thinking, ( Happens every now and then), Why isn't there a F&P
FAQ?...(or is there, and I'm gonna write a lot in Vain)
We see a lot of very frequent questions, like :

How can I read Russian WWW pages on my Mac?

I am looking for Pen Pals for my class, Are there any groups that deal with
this?

I want to find Russian Business Partners / Girlfriends / Atomic Scientists,
Can I get A hold of them on F&P?

And so on....

So, Unless someone has already started this, I think I will.

I need the following Volunteers,

FAQ Master, Someone who will coordinate the Cut and Paste work, Be the
backbone of the project, This person should be in it for the long run, as
FAQs are usually MAINTAINED by Someone. This person would keep the latest
version available.

FAQ Master Russian Ver. Same as above, Tolko Po Russki (A Ukrainskova Mova?
mozha beet Belaruskaya lepsha? ;))

Public Relations GURU,...This person handles mailing people who would like
to contribute, and keeps pumping the public for more info

Section Managers, these should be people who are specialist or have a
particular interest in one or another area, they would handle

Question Collector, Someone who would go back a few years and find
questions in the old issues of F&P

Web Master There has to be a WWW page, wouldn't you agree.

Web Master Russian ( A kak zhe)

Other Websters, (The LINK MASTERS)

Translation Group, ( Any Russian - English Teachers with a lack of
materials out there?)

Donors, People who would read the FAQ, an answer unanswered questions or
submit new ones.

I'm not sure how much I can do as I have a very weak connection to the
Internet at the moment, but I will help coordinate the effort or do some of
the web authoring.

Perhaps I could help with some of the skeleton of the first FAQ,

Dave

Subject: Russian Visa Info Needed

I recently became engaged to a woman in Ufa, Russia. Currently, our plan
is for me to go to Russia within a month, have a wedding there with her
family and friends, and bring her back with me to the U.S.. However, I
have been hearing stories that she will not be able to obtain a Visa for 6
months. She will be in Spain for one week this month and has a Visa for
that. I was told by an Immigration attorney that a Fiance Visa will take
30 to 60 days. It seems that if we are already married, it would take a
lot less.

If anyone has any insight on this situation, and/or has any alternate
solutions, it would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Sydney Urshan

Dear Sir,
If possible I would be very grateful if you could help me to try
to find a dear friend of mine.
He was until 1991 a memeber of the Soviet Army based in Poland in a town
named Kudowa, he was a major and was responsible for running a sanatorium
for wives of Afganistan war veterans. His name was Geniadii Gienadowicz.
I was his close friend and sadly have lost contact due to my emigration
from Poland to England, where I presently live permanently. I am
desperately trying to find Giena, and could you please suggest any way of
it being possible to reach him, please help.

Yours sincerely

I just found your page by looking at a June 1996 issue of Russian Life
magazine. What about including a section that may assist members of the
former Soviet Union in getting their U.S. visa, green card, citizenship,
and/or education. U.S. Laws concerning student work visa are of
particular interest to me. Where do I find these on-line? What about jobs
for foreigners...is there a section in your page addressing this issue?
What about a list of Russian Restaurants? I am still exploring. I may
find my answers. I only want to help you. Thank you for this comment
section. joe

US-RUSSIAN INVESTMENT SYMPOSIUM
Financial and Direct Investment Opportunities in Russia

January 9-12, 1997
Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government

Dear Colleague:

We would like to invite you to participate in an unprecedented initiative
by the highest levels of the Russian government - a U.S.-Russian Investment
Symposium on "Financial and Direct Investment Opportunities in Russia."
The Symposium will address what President Yeltsin and Prime Minister
Chernomyrdin have identified as the single largest challenge for the
Russian economy in the year and decade ahead: attracting international
direct and equity investment. As Prime Minister Chernomyrdin's letter
welcoming participation in this Symposium states, "Many of the Russian
enterprises participating in the Harvard Symposium are the flagships of our
economy, and I am sure that partnerships with them will be productive and
mutually beneficial."

The Symposium has attracted high-level support form the U.S. Government,
which recognizes the importance of investment to Russia's future and has
consequently made investment a central theme of the gore-Chernomyrdin
relationship. In President Clinton's words, "The United States and the
rest of the advanced economies should continue their commitment to
investment and to support of democracy and economic reforms."

Special features of this Symposium include:

* Highest level Russian and U.S. government principals providing
their unique perspectives on government policies and programs to promote
American investments in Russia.

* Participation by more than 100 leading Russian decision-makers and
businessmen, including Anatoly Chubais (Presidential Chief of Staff),
Yevgeny Yasin (Minister of Economics), Sergei Dubinin (Chairman of the
Central Bank), Boris Berezovsky (Deputy Secretary to the Russian Security
Council), Dmitry Vasilyev (Chairman of the Federal Commission on
Securities), Vyacheslav Prokhorov (Chairman of State Committee on Small
Business; and Presidents of LUKoil, Gazprom, GAZ, Inkombank, and the
Association of Russian Banks.

* Corporate experiences with participation of key managers from
successful foreign direct investment firms such as ABB, General Electric,
Mars, McDonald's, PepsiCo and Unilever.

* Break-out sessions to review investment opportunities and specific
business plans prepared by top Russian and other NIS enterprises.

* Further individual and small group meetings to discuss the climate
for investment with key individuals from Russian regions, and delegations
from Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Georgia and Latvia.

We hope that you and your company will join us for this unique opportunity
to meet top Russian government officials and business leaders to discuss
the Russian business climate and specific investment possibilities.

We look forward to seeing you at Harvard in January.
