Hello Friends and Partners,

Update on Russian Lit. project, nothing to update. I wrote back to the
owner of Odin Publishing because he is interesting in publishing young
Russian poets, but unfortunately I had to write back to him with nothing of
the sort. NO ONE HAS SENT ME ANYTHING! So, please, if you are a young,
unpublished poet from the Former Soviet Union with no interest in profit, but
interest in recognition for your work, PLEASE WRITE TO ME! Also, if ANYONE
out there knows ANYONE that fits this discription, PLEASE WRITE TO ME!

Also, I am in the process of writing an adventure story about life in
northern Siberia, but I need to know some more information about it. What
kinds of foods do Siberians eat, what kind of customs do they have, what are
their living quarters, etc.? If anyone knows anything about Siberian life
that might help me, please write.

Greetings!

Margaret Martin, an enterprising colleague of mine at Carleton College in
Minnesota, has set up a web page containing the questions that her
Comparative Politics class and mine have been exchanging over the internet.
The "Carleton-Novgorod Exchange" will eventually have pictures of both our
classes, and is rather nicely done. I have added a cross-link to it off of
my web page at URI. For a peek at the differences (and similiarities)
between college students in Russia and America, take a look at

Sender: "Paul E. Richardson" (71740.1473@CompuServe.COM)
Subject: New Russia Map!

Dear fellow Russophiles!

We are going to be announcing this widely in a few days, but we wanted
our on-line friends to be the first to know about it.

After two long years, we are proud to be able to announce today the
release of our (Bilingual Wall Map of Russia and the Republics). This is
the first, all-new Western map of Russia since it became a country again
in 1991. But it is also the first ever map of Russia, the world's
largest country, based _entirely_ on Geographic Information System (GIS)
Mapping Software -- a highly-accurate technology that is based on
satellite measurements of every feature on the earth's surface.

The map measures a huge 3 foot by 4 foot unfolded (laminated version
also available) and is actually two maps in one: one side is entirely in
Russian, the other entirely in English. The same colorful, shaded-relief
map of Russia is on both sides, as are maps showing Russia's
administrative boundaries and a regional map of Moscow. Over 400 cities
are shown on the map (all cities over 35,000 residents) and indexed
there too!

What we have tried to create is a map that was beautiful enough to hang
on your wall, yet accurate enough to be truly useful. And we all know
about the purposeful inaccuracy of Soviet-made maps of old. While we may
yet find mistakes on this map, at least the mistakes will be accidental.

We are really excited about this map. You should be able to find it in
map and book stores shortly. Of course you can also order it directly
through our catalog order line, at 800-639-4301. Or by email at
73244.3372@compuserve.com. The map costs just $10 plus $3 s&h (the
laminated version is $25 plus $7 s&h).

If you would like to view a small portion of the map on the Web, visit
it at:

http://www.friends-partners.org/rispubs/rusmap.htm

Best regards,

Paul Richardson

SHORT-TERM COLLEGE TEACHERS NEEDED IN KAZAKSTAN!

Are you a college professor looking for a challenge? Retired? Between jobs?
Need a break from American college life? Yasawi University in southern
Kazakstan invites college teachers to spend from one month to one semester or
more at the University. Lecturers in economics, business, law and English
language and literature are especially needed. Other fields are possible.
Language of instruction for short-term teachers will be English with
translation provided into Kazak or Russian. Financial arrangements are
negotiable.

Hoja Ahmet Yasawi Kazak-Turkish International University is a post-soviet
institution of higher learning with campuses in several cities in southern
Kazakstan. The need for short-term teachers is greatest at the main campus in
the desert city of Turkistan, near Shymkent (Chimkent). The Turkistan campus
has about 3,500 students in four faculties: economics, law, Oriental studies,
and history and philology. Turkistan is a historic city of religious
importance to the 80,000 Kazaks and Uzbeks who live there.

For more information, you may fax Prof. Mustafa Rysuly, Rector, Yasawi
University (Fax: 7-325-334-1012) or send email to:

Subject: need assistance purchasing a laptop computer

Hi friends!
I'm planning on going to Russia within the next year to do work with NGO's.
I'm looking at buying a laptop right now to use while I am there. Does
anyone have any suggestions as to what brand and model of laptop I should
consider buying?

Are there any things I should especially keep in mind while looking for a
laptop to take to Russia? I am especially concerned about repair and
servicing turn-around time should something go wrong with the computer while
I am there?

I am planning on doing wordprocessing, using the Internet, use a personal
information manager, and maybe use spreadsheets and maybe put out a newsletter.

The specs I am looking for in a laptop are:

Pentium 100 Mhz
810 MB Hard drive
16 Mb RAM
Windoze 95-friendly system
maybe an internal CD-ROM

Any suggestions and thoughts are welcomed.

In addition, I am looking at buying a portable printer. I have heard about
the portable HP Deskjet 340 and the Canon BJC. Any experience with either of
these or any other portable printer you might suggest?

Thank you!

Subject: Maxim Sitnikov survey

Dear Friends and Partners!

My good friend, Maxim Sitnikov, asked me to post this message to the List,
and I hope many of you will take the time to write to him in response. He's
from the Republic of Mari El, which is east of Moscow, on the Volga River.

Along with trying to learn and teach more about life in the West, he's been
working to formulate legislation to educate and service the handicapped
people in Mari El, so perhaps this is another issue that might be addressed
in your letters.

Very truly yours,

Cheryl A. Madden

I am Maxim Sitnikov, a Russian journalist working for
"Mariyskaya Pravda", the main newspaper of Republic Mari El.

Since August 1996 we make a weekly column about the West.
The aim of our project is to show to readers how people live in
other countries: workers and businessmen, the unemployed and
millionaires, men and women. Subject does not matter: we can
make an interesting article of anything you will write to us
about.

Will you answer our questions? Do you want to make a lot of
friends in Russia? Drop me a line, and one happy day I will send
you a Russian newspaper writing about you!

Some of our questions may seem strange to you, but you
should bear in mind that we lived behind the 'iron curtain' more
than 70 years and most of us have never been abroad.

Do not hesitate to write to Russia! We live in an
unpredictable country, and tomorrow may be late!

Greetings From Belarus,

I am writing in hopes that you may be able to provide me with some
information or assistance.

You may be aware that Belarus is sufferring from a drastic increase
in the number of AIDS infected citizens (300% Increase from last
year).

I am assisting a grassroots movement initiated by Victor Lapitsky,
a local concert promoter, to increase aids awareness.

The project will place more than 1000 posters providing information
about preventive Infection aimed at young people at gathering
places in the city of Gomel. The posters will also invite people of
all ages to come to the Aids Awareness Concert that will take place
on Sunday 12/1/96.

At the Concert an unconfirmed 22 bands will play 7 hours and take
up 3 floors of the Himica Palace of Culture in Gomel Belarus.
Admission will be Free. We expect that more than 5000 people will
attend the AIDS Awareness Concert.

We would like to be able to hand out free condoms, and I am
wondering if you have any contacts with organizations in the FSU or
elsewhere that can donate condoms.

We would like to have printed literature (English, Russian, German)
Even text from such literature would be helpful as the information
from the government press is plain and boring "Don't Share Needles,
Don't be a homosexual, etc." It does not deal with relations with
people with aids, nor the intimate side of the desease.

Anyone interested in attending may come, foriengers will have
translators from the local university, please send the usual
passport info for an invitation.

Thanks In Advance,
David Stickney
