Attention all users: A very poor family in Russia (Chelyabinsk) needs help=

to treat their 14 year old daughter from kidney disease. Both of the=20
parents were laid off from their jobs so they can't afford any treatment in=
=20
Mosow, or St. Petersburg. As their friend, I'm looking for sponsors who=
=20
will help to bring the girl and her mother to the U.S. for good medical=20
treatment. Unfortunately we are not reach too. Our family of four barely=

makes enough money to pay for rent.
If you have any suggestions or could share the similar experience,
I would greatly appreciate your response. Thank you all.

Subject: Funders in FSU on disk
The Center for Coordination and Information at the Socio-Ecological Union
has compiled a database that includes hundreds of funding organizations
world-wide that are active in the FSU. They make this information availabl=
e
to anyone in high, low and medium technology formats, *in Russian*: a
searchable WWW site http://cci.glasnet.ru ; a refence book ; and on a
hypertext disk. The disk, infinitely reproducable (as long as it is not fo=
r
commercial purposes), may be particularly useful to organizations that seek
to help nascent NGOs across the FSU that have computers but do not (yet)
have access to the web. These disks can be obtained for the cost of the
disk itself (or bring your own) from CCI in Moscow.

Subject: Russian Lit. Update
Hello Friends,
I'd like to give you an update about the letter I previously sent
concerning getting some Russian Literature published. I mentioned a local
publishing company that I had yet to write to in my last letter. Well, I
wrote to that company (Odin Publishing), and the next week, the owner of th=
e
company called me! He says he is very interested in getting the literature
published, and he is sending me a letter to tell me his thoughts about it a=
nd
about what I will need to do. After that, I will call him and hopefully ge=
t
this deal finalized.
So, until I get his letter, I will wait. To our Russian friends, you
may start sending me some work if you are interested. For right now, there
are no regulations on what to write, just don't send me a novel. If you ca=
n
only send me your work in Russian, you may. If you can type in English,
please do so.
Note: I'm not pursuing money at this point for publishing, and anyone
who is expecting to get paid for their work will be dissapointed. This
doesn't mean that the owner of Odin Publishing isn't willing to pay, but ou=
r
conversation was short and I didn't get many details. Hopefully, the lette=
r
I should be receiving will explain everything.
As for those of you who can't send me anything right now, but are still
interested, don't worry. Take your time, I won't ask for more work until I
receive the letter from Odin Publishing's owner.
Thanks to all of those who have helped me with trying to find publishers
and everyone who has given me advice and encouragement. Will keep everyone
posted.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I am putting together a guide to finding internships in Central and=20

The guide will be available on the WWW and in hard copy. The most=20

to hear from:
(a) individuals with experience in locating internships, including=20
method(s) of contact, type of internship (paid/unpaid, duties, etc.),=20
how many you applied for and how long it took, and any other particulars;
(b) individuals, organizations, or companies who currently offer or would=

like to offer internships. Please specify particulars and, at the very lea=

all available contact data (address, phone, fax, e-mail). If you are now =
or have previously=20
employed interns, any information you could provide as to what you look for=

what makes a candidate stand out would be greatly appreciated.
All respondents will be referenced on request. Please indicate if you'd=20

Dear Valery,
I cannot keep myself from pleasure to let you to read the letter
that I have gotten recently. For sure, this letter is not about
Chechnia at all.
---------- Forwarded Message ----------
Dear NN,
...Who could predict that my fluency in English would come so handy
in Russia, on account of the Chechen rebellion!
The event under the title _An Ecumenical Revival: Above Sectarian
Divisions_ ("Ekumenicheskoe vozrozhdenie: poverkh veroispovednykh
razdelenij" -- hardly a skillful translation) held in a local
_Dom Kul'tury_ gathered about a hundred participants. The chairman,
Mr. Dow [I've changed his name: after all, this is America --
Const.], a shiny guy between 35 and 65, was the only speaker;
miserably weak in Russian, he was assisted by a plumpy interpreter
Nadya, whose handsome hourly wage was written on her face (but,
upon the final analysis, it was she who made the day).
I introduced myself as a Russian Jew visiting Moscow from LA; Mr.
Dow welcomed me quite enthusiastically, and in his opening
statement notified the audience that "a friend from the US is
among us". Then he started a highly professional multimedia
presentation, using his laptop, projection TV, and the HiFi
equipment: a small mental effort of abstraction from the
"ecumenical" verbiage made an impression of a Microsoft PR-man
pushing some hot new stuff. No one had taken care to convert
his presentation into Russian, so Nadya had a hard time catching
up. Most of it was music and video, though.
Anyway, fun began right when he shut off his laptop: no formal
Q&A, but a word from here, a word from there, dispatched single-
-handedly by Nadya, who not only knew what to pick, but also had
a mike to suppress what she didn't want to pick. It looked like
the Chechen war was the most important thing Mr. Dow had up
his sleeve: again and again he referred to deprivations and
atrocities, howling a-la Rev. Jackson. I was getting antsier
and antsier by the minute, and when he proclaimed: "the World
Community demands immediate and unconditional peace in Chechnya!",
I got to my feet and, shortcutting Nadya's service, inquired:
-- Could you please elaborate on how your Community demands
unconditional peace in Peru, in Northern Ireland, in Turkish
Kurdistan, and _especially_ in the confrontation between
Israel and Arab terrorists.
Mr. Dow turned less of a professional (or more of a moron)
then I thought. He came close to me, touched my elbow very
friendly, and said:
-- Look. This is not their business. This can only make
things worse. This can damage the trust. Let the Russians
watch our shows, wear our T-shirts, eat our candy, chew our
bubble-gum, and love it. We will take care of the rest, OK?
-- OK, -- said I. And, having turned to the audience, undaunted
by the impending blast from Nadya's mike, translated my question
and his answer into Russian.
-- Are you translating? -- Mr. Dow was kinda surprised, --
****, you said you're Jewish.
I translated this one too, including the s-word.
Most of the audience was stunned, but the ecumenical-minded
started to yell: "This is impossible! Don't believe him!"
("Ne mozhet byt'! on vret!"). And at this point I made an error
which could have been fatal. I said:
-- Dear Nadya, please confirm the accuracy of my translation.
Had dear Nadya gotten some minor training from the Usenet jerks
(especially Russian-speaking) or from the US politicians, she would
have calmly disregarded my appeal and with a smile followed through
on something less controversial -- like "How to develop togetherness
in a nonexclusive and tolerant environment". But, in spite of her
World Community connections, she remained human, and, having heard
Mr. Dow's revelations, stood speechless, opening and closing
her mouth like a bass pulled out of the water.
Noise increased. Mr. Dow, fully in control, stuffed his laptop
in his briefcase, said that under such circumstances he had no other
choice than to wrap up the talk, and left with a nod...

Fall 1996 Schedule
American Institute of Business and Economics - Moscow
*****************************************************************
The American Institute of Business and Economics (AIBEc) is a
noncommercial, not-for-profit American business school in Moscow
that trains young Russian men and women for business careers.
Students are not charged tuition for their study at AIBEc. A
majority of students are admitted to the school through a com-
petitive examination process, with more than six applicants for
every successful candidate. Additional students are designated
for participation in AIBEc courses by employers who, as sponsors
and contributors, are the primary sources of funds to the school.
Courses are taught in evening or weekend hours to permit partici-
pation by students with full-time jobs. Most courses meet one
night a week from 7:00-10:00 pm during a 13 week semester,
although other schedules are sometimes used. Students must attend
regularly to complete courses successfully. With few exceptions,
lectures and readings are in English.
The Fall 1996 semester will begin September 2 and run through
December 14. Registration will begin August 14.
The following courses are being presented:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
* Corporate Finance
* Investments
* Financial Accounting
* Managerial Accounting
* Managerial Economics
* International Finance
* Principles of Marketing
* Business Law I
* English Communication Skills I
-----------------------------------------------------------------
In addition to offering training opportunities, AIBEc operates a
placement service for its students and alumni. Corporate
sponsors of the Institute and contributors to the Institute have
priority access to the placement service. Students and
alumni seeking jobs keep their resumes on file at the school, and
packets of resumes are periodically circulated to eligible spon-
sors and contributors. Sponsors and contributors also may post
job openings at the school, make presentations to groups of
students at the weekly Seminar on East-West Business Relations,
or ask AIBEc faculty or staff for help in filling individual
positions.
Details of the Fall semester schedule, and information on how to
become a sponsor, can be found on the Institute's home page
(http://www.knight-hub.com/aibec/) or can be obtained from the

Center, in Saratov, Russia. Perhaps some list members would like

Opportunity to Cooperate - Saratov Exchange Consulting Center
*****************************************************************
I am writing you on behalf of the Saratov Exchange Consulting
Center. It was opened on the October 9th, 1995. The Center is a
joint project of the Saratov Local Committee of AIESEC
(Association of Students Studying Economics and Management) and
Saratov Rotaract Club. It is a non-profit non-governmental
public organization which was founded with the support of
Eurasia foundation, city administration and Saratov Rotary
Club.
The primarily goals of the Exchange Consulting Center are :
* distributing information about all available financial assis-
tance programs, exchange programs and foreign traineeships
within Saratov community;
* providing assistance in obtaining application forms and infor-
mation about the requirements for those interested for partici-
pating in such programs;
* finding employment opportunities for young specialists;
* organizing educational and business seminars and conferences.
Saratov is one of the biggest industrial, educational and
scientific centers in the Volga region. There is a big interest
in establishing international contacts and in participating in
the exchange programs abroad. But unfortunately it has been
difficult to obtain necessary information. Our Center is aimed
to fill that gap.
In its work Center has achieved the following results and took
part in the following events:
* contacts with many foreign and domestic organizations;
* information on different exchange programs and application
forms which were distributed among the Saratov students;
* database containing the information about Center's visitors
and students of Saratov Academy of economics;
* several recruitment projects;
* pre-departure orientations;
* Young Farmers Exchange Program which was held with the help of
Wyoming and Saratov Rotary Clubs. Four Russian young farmers
went to Wyoming for 6 months;
* International Traineeship Exchange Program - AIESEC exchange
program;
* international AIESEC Conferences in Europe;
* Education Advising Workshop in Rostov-on-Don.
The Center is looking for new partners and new activities now.
We hope that your conference will help us in our work. Thank
you for your cooperation.
