DISTRIBUTED FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Brown University upgrades its video conference access to Moscow

The Russian Link, a low-cost two-way real-time video-conference system
offered through Brown University and the Institute for Space Research in
Russia, has upgraded to a higher speed to improve service.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Russian Link, a joint international
telecommunications project of Brown University and the Institute for Space
Research (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, has upgraded its
video-conferencing system to 384 kilobytes per second (kbps) to provide
state-of-the-art quality. The Russian Link is a unique effort combining
U.S. and Russian technologies to offer low-cost two-way real-time video
conferencing to Moscow from sites throughout the United States. Two
Russian-made earth stations located on the Brown campus and at IKI
communicate via an Intersputnik satellite. The Moscow and Providence
sites are equipped with PictureTel video-conferencing systems that follow
international standards for compatibility with other systems.
By dialing to Brown, video-conferencing sites nationwide can
connect to the PictureTel studio at IKI and its adjacent classroom. In
Moscow, IKI provides expert technical support for users in Russia.

Video conferencing enables face-to-face communications with distant
colleagues through high-speed telephone lines. Video conferences can be
held point to point - between two sites - or can unite up to 20 sites by
way of a voice-activated bridge. The technology has long been used by
businesses and increasingly is making inroads in academic and non-profit
sectors, which are discovering the benefits of video conferencing for
collaborative research, distance learning, project planning, informal work
sessions, recruitment, and public relations briefings.

Since 1992, The Russian Link has facilitated and enhanced the work of many
U.S.-Russian projects and exchange programs, including the Connecticut
Department of Education, the Federal Communications Commission, Hamilton
Standard and the National Aeronautic Space Agency Jet Propulsion Lab.
The Russian Link evolved from a joint project begun in 1989 between the
Center for Foreign Policy at Brown University and IKI. The start-up phase
of the project was made possible through a grant from the Carnegie
Foundation of New York.

For more information about the Russian Link, visit its home page on the
World Wide Web at
http://www.brown.edu/Facilities/CIS/Communications/Video/ruslink.html; call
401 863-7304, or send e-mail to Video_Conferencing@Brown.edu.

Subject: Looking for Friend(s) in Moscow, Russia

Hi,

I am going to Russia in 1997. I want to make some new friends
over the Internet before I go. I will be in Moscow 2 days and 1 night.
It will be a quick trip, but I want to stay with a russian family
rather than a hotel. I have met several russian men on the internet
but few women. Women don't have e-mail in russian because it is
too expensive? I suppose but I wanted to meet some russian women
before I went to Moscow. I want to hear about russian life from
them as well. I'm sure their point of view will be different than a
man's opinion.

I live in Colorado. I work in a software company.

                         PROFILE OF ARAW
*****************************************************************
The Alliance of American and Russian Women, Inc. is a nonprofit
organization founded in 1991 in response to the dire poverty and
extreme dislocation which Russian women have suffered as a result
of the economic shifts in the former Soviet Union.

ARAW works closely with the Institute for Entrepreneurial Devel-
opment in St. Petersburg, the Association of Women Entrepreneurs
(in the closed cities region of the Urals and Western Siberia),
and the Novgorod Woman's Business Organizations.

ARAW's mission is to assist Russian women in developing and
managing micro-enterprises, through which they can support them-
selves and their families and participate in the development of
the new market economy. Through ARAW's programs, Russian women
are beginning to understand the power of networking among them-
selves. ARAW is becoming politically active and recognizing that,
working together, women can gain a voice in the political pro-
cess.

Subject: New Data from the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey
         (xpost from FSU)

The Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey at the University of North
Carolina is pleased to announce the availability of new survey data
collected from the most recent round of surveying (Fall 1995/Winter
1996). The data is free of charge and is accessible through our site on
the Internet. Please visit us at http://www.cpc.unc.edu/rlms.

We are making a wide range of data available. Our most recent round of
surveying contains data from about 10,648 individuals in roughly 3,781
households. In addition to the raw data, interested scholars may also
obtain constructed measures of household income, expenditure, labor force
participation, demographic composition, and a variety of health and
nutritional measures. Data from our first round of surveying (Fall 1992)
is also available.

To obtain your copy of our data, visit our site on the World Wide Web.
Our web pages contain vast amounts of information about the project, the
surveys conducted, and the data. Please browse our pages and download
our documentation. Finally, fill out our request for data, and our
server will send you an automatic email message with detailed FTP
instructions for receiving the data sets.

Given the current progress of political and economic events, timely
survey data of such broad scope is likely to be of interest to a wide
range of individuals and organizations. We hope that this data is of
service to the community of scholars and policy makers studying the
Former Soviet Union. Please address queries and comments to
rlms@unc.edu.

Regards,

David Robinson

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
AN INVITATION TO SUBSCRIBE
TO THE CIPE LISTSERV
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) is proud to announce
the launch of its listserv -- an electronic mailing list. Two or three
times a month, CIPE will send updates on its activities and publications to
subscribers via the Internet. We're sending you this invitation because
we've worked with you or your organization in the past -- or we hope to do
so in the future.

As you may know, a listserv is a simple way to keep up to date on a given
topic or on the activities of an organization. CIPE's listserv messages
will tell you about:

   * pathbreaking conferences and seminars on economic policy,
programs to strengthen the private sector in emerging
democracies, and training courses for business association
leaders -- all directed with the benefit of CIPE's long
     experience in promoting market-oriented democratic change;

   * new issues of Economic Reform Today, CIPE's quarterly journal
of change and public policy -- offering unique insight on
topics including the link between property rights and
economic growth, privatization techniques and strategies,
     and the role of business associations in democratic society;
     and

   * new online services available as part of CIPE's rapidly
growing site on the World Wide Web at (HTTP://WWW.CIPE.ORG/
-- a 500-document site that already offers a wealth of
practical help for decision-makers in both the public and
     private sectors.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOW TO SUBSCRIBE
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's simple. Just send an email message to (CIPE-Announce@mail.cipe.org
with the word (subscribe as the subject.

As we noted above, the CIPE listserv will send you messages several times a
month. You won't be inundated with long, daily postings -- just key
information on CIPE's cutting edge programs.

Subject: Congratulations!

Dear Natasha and Greg,

My name is Alex Halberstadt and I am the editor at Moscow Channel, a new
online journal devoted to Russian culture, arts, and cyberspace (Check it
out at www.moscowchannel.com). We were created by Moscow Media, a
multimedia design firm based in New York City.

In addition to finding the best editorial content we possibly can, our goal
is to encourage growth and prosperity in Russian cyberspace. To address
this need, we created the Golden Samovar, an award recognizing excellence,
depth, and originality on the World Wide Web. This award is not a PR
tool--it is only given to sites demonstrating truly exceptional conception,
execution, and content.

For our first release, we have selected five of our favorite
Russia-related sites, ones that continually compel and amaze us. I am
writing to tell you that Friends and Partners has been selected as one of
our first winners.

Congratulations!

We are fans of Friends and Partners, and have used to to great effect
during our research. We are glad that we can bring some recognition to your
fine work.

A feature on your site can be found in Moscow Channel's -NET- section.

We encourage you to display the the Golden Samovar logo on your site. You
can download it directly from www.moscowchannel.com/sam2.gif, or better
yet, from our home page.

Again, please accept our congaratulations.

Please feel free to write me with any questions or concerns at
editor@moscowchannel.com.

Thanks,
Alex Halberstadt, Editor
Moscow Channel
