Subject: Russia, Ukraine & Belarus Photos Wanted
Greetings,
In a few weeks time, the guidebook "Russia, Ukraine and Belarus by Rail"
will be published in the UK. Originally it was planned that it would only
have line drawings but now the publisher would like to include 8 pages of
colour photos. I am not a photographer and none of my snaps are good
enough. Consequently if you have any high quality colour slides and prints
that they would like published, I would love to hear from you. The sort of
photos the publisher is after are those that capture the people, culture
and places of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, and also shots featuring trains
and life on trains. Full recognition of the photos source and a
complementary copy of the book is offered in lieu of payment. If you are
interested, please contact me and I will get you to air mail the photos
directly to England and the publisher will then choose the 30 best.
Regards
Athol Yates

Our first exhibition is "Safonov Art Studio"
--------------------------------------------
Yuri Safonov has graduated with honours from Moscow University
of Fine Arts, having taken in two years' time the course of five years.
His paintings were more than once exhibited in Moscow exhibition halls,
in Baltic countries, and in some countries of West as well. According
to the opinion of English art experts of the company "Stanley Gibbons"
he was named one of the 20 top-notch painters of the former USSR
whose works were worth of being included into the catalogue
"Album of Russian Painting" printed in the United Kingdom.
The Tretyakov Gallery collection holds a great number of his works.
His pictures were bought by Michael Gorbachev for his private art
collection, they were purchared by some foreign art-lovers for their
private collections.

The anecdotal account of observations made during a study trip to Moscow, 17
May-14 June, is available for distribution by e-mail upon request.
These notes are the latest in a series begun in 1992.
If you requested the 1995 notes and asked to receive future ones automatically,

Further Moscow study trips will be scheduled for Spring 1997, but if enough
interested people were able to quickly decide to participate, one of 3-4 weeks
could be organized for Sep-Oct.

Subject: INFO-RUSS: Travel to Russia (fwd) (xpost from INFO-RUSS)
Dear friends,
there are a lot of you and I hope that somebody has the information I am
seeking. The situation is rather standard. I came to US with a student
visa, got a green card here and now want to go to Russia to see my parents.
Entering Russia is easy, of course. The interesting part is how to leave
it without too much trouble. This has been a hot topic for long time now.
Some time ago a nice summary of options was posted here. In short,
four options were described:
- go to Russia and there apply for a permission to leave for permanent
residence
- get the permission while you are in US (pay $500 to the consulate etc)
- pretend that you are not Russian citizen
- go through the third country on your way back
It seems that a new option has appeared. At least, the russian officials
in Washington and San Francisco consulates claim, that to go to Russia
and back I have to do NOTHING as long as my passport was issued in 1992 or
later. They also say, that getting a green card in US doesn't automatically
mean moving to US for permanent residence and so it is not necessary
to get that famous emmigration stamp in the passport. Having spent the major
part of my life in Russia, I find it difficult to believe.
So here goes the question:
Did you or anybody you know who has a green card but is not registered
with Russian OVIR as moved to the USA for permanent residence managed
to leave Russia directly for USA without any problems?
Please reply directly to me. I'll try to post a summary later.
Yours,
Tatiana Shpeisman

Muskie/FSA Career Forum in Moscow
*****************************************************************
The Edmund S. Muskie and Freedom Support Act Graduate Fellowship
Programs are planning a Career Forum for Returning Fellows and
Alumni
Since 1993, approximately 700 young professionals from Russia and
the other countries of the former Soviet Union have obtained
graduate education in the United States under the Edmund S.
Muskie and Freedom Support Act Graduate Fellowship Programs
(Muskie/FSA). Within Russia, 40% of Muskie/FSA alumni now reside
in Moscow or St. Petersburg.
In an effort to serve the needs of present Muskie/FSA alumni and
returning fellows, IREX and the Moscow Educational Advising
Center, in cooperation with ACTR/ACCELS, IIE, and Soros/OSI are
sponsoring a one-day Career Forum for graduates of the Muskie/FSA
and other USIA-sponsored educational exchange programs. Inde-
pendent graduates of US universities will also be invited to
attend.
The Career Forum will be held in Moscow on Saturday, September 7,
1996. It will consist of a series of small workshops focusing on
the Russian job market and a three-hour job fair. Representa-
tives of Western and Russian firms and organizations interested
in meeting some of Russia's most highly trained and highly quali-
fied people are invited to attend. Registration forms for organi-
zations are now available. Fees will consist primarily of booth
rental during the job fair.
At present, a large number of Muskie/FSA alumni in Russia are
employed by Russian local and regional governments; multi-lateral
international assistance banks such as the World Bank, IFC, and
EBRD; and Russian and Western businesses. Western corporations
that presently employ Muskie/FSA alumni include Arthur Andersen,
Asea Brown Boveri, Ernst & Young, McKinsey & Company, Philip
Morris, Price Waterhouse, and Salomon Brothers.
The Muskie/FSA Fellowships, which are programs of the United
States Information Agency (USIA), provide grants for one or two
years of graduate study in the United States in the following
fields: Business Administration, Economics, Education Administra-
tion, Journalism and Mass Communications, Law, Library and Infor-
mation Science, Public Administration, and Public Policy. The
programs are administered by the American Council of Teachers of
Russian/Association for Collaboration in Education and Language
Study (ACTR/ACCELS), the Institute of International Education
(IIE), the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX), and
the Soros Foundations/Open Society Institute (Soros/OSI).
