International Institute of Russian Language and Culture

SUMMER SCHOOL OF RUSSIAN LANGUAGE AND AREA
STUDIES

Study Russian in Russia's Friendliest City!

The Institute of International
Communication and the International
Institute of Russian Language and Culture
(IIRLC), two private educational centers
cooperating under the aegis of Tver
InterContact Group, are pleased to announce
the opening of registration for the Second
Annual Summer School of Russian Language
and Area Studies in Tver. The participants
in the program will receive intensive
training in the Russian language and in
associated area studies. Moreover, they
will have the opportunity to take part in a
fascinating program of excursions, live
with a hospitable Russian family, and
closely interact with their Russian peers
studying foreign languages at the Institute
of International Communication.
Participants in the program will long
remember their visit to the very heart of
Russia.

The Summer of 1995 saw the successful
completion of the First International
Summer School of Russian Language and Area
Studies, organized by Tver InterContact
Group. Building on its three previous years
of experience in offering Russian language
courses to students and professionals, the
Institute organized an unforgettable
program, in which 150 Russian and 60
international students from all over the
world (including the United States, Great
Britain, Canada, Germany, France, Belgium,
the Netherlands, Finland, and Japan) took
part. In addition to the core classroom
program, comprising courses on Russian
language and communication, and lectures
and seminars on literature, philosophy,
history, and geography, the students
participated in creative workshops and
studios, where they studied Russian folk
art, songs, and traditional Russian folk
dancing. In the evenings, participants
gathered in the Institute's Linguistic Cafe
to practice their newly-acquired language
skills in conversations with their peers
and colleagues, to the accompaniment of
guitars and songs from different countries.
Weekends featured excursions to area
museums, and sightseeing in Moscow, St.
Petersburg, and the ancient Russian
provincial cities of Sergiev Posad,
Torzhok, and Ostashkov.

The Summer School is conducted in Tver, an
ancient Russian city on the Volga. The
city is located directly between Moscow
(150 km from Tver) and St. Petersburg (500
km from Tver). Numerous and convenient
methods of transportation to the southern
and northern capitals of Russia make Tver
an ideal place in which to acquaint
yourself with the national culture, both of
the capitals and of the provinces. Tver
itself, with nearly 500,000 residents, has
everything which is needed for an
interesting and active holiday: museums and
galleries, theaters and concert halls, gyms
and night clubs. The bulk of the program's
academic activities take place at the
Institute of Russian Language and Culture,
which is located in the historical center
of the city on Tryokhsvyatskaya Street. In
the summer, this pedestrian street becomes
the city's favorite place for relaxation,
strolling around the shops, and meeting
with friends. It is only a few minutes
walk from Tryokhsvyatskaya Street to the
ancient city park, which is located on the
right bank of the Volga river. This great
Russian river has its source in one of the
lakes of the Tver region, the Lake Seliger,
a natural pearl of European Russia.

The Summer School invites everyone:
students and teachers, professionals and
amateurs, tourists and experts of all ages
and interests, to visit Russia during her
most beautiful season, to see with their
own eyes her rich culture, lovingly
preserved in the Russian provinces. Do not
make the mistake of seeing Russia through a
tourist bus window; Russia can only be
understood by living it! To everyone who
chooses to come to Tver this summer to
study and vacation, the Summer School
promises education, entertainment, and
memories that will last a lifetime.

What is the weather like during a Russian
summer?

Summer is an amazing time of year in Tver.
Perhaps it lacks some of the romanticism of
the Russian snows, but it makes up for this
by generously providing warm sunshine, the
clean air of Tver's pine forests, her
clear, cool lakes and rivers, the quiet
beauty of her pastoral vistas, as well as
good fishing and harvesting of mushrooms
and berries - things which have been long
forgotten in the urbanized West.

The weather of the Russian summer will
remind the majority of Europeans and North
Americans of the warm spring and early fall
weather of their native countries. The
temperature during the summer in Tver
ranges between 16 and 25 degrees Celsius
(60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit), with rain
often falling at night. Step by step you
will understand the charm of this gentle
season, and you will certainly wish to
visit the Russian summer again.

Calendar of the Summer School

The School opens its doors on the 25th of
June, and continues its work until the 16th
of September - the beginning of the fall
trimester for students of the Institute of
International Communication. You can
choose from programs of various lengths,
the shortest program being two weeks. The
longest standard program is an eight week
program, but arrangements can generally be
made should you wish to extend your stay in
Tver and continue your studies during the
Fall Semester.

courses, and lectures and seminars on
related area studies are an required in
order to receive the Program certificate.
Participation in the cultural-enrichment
program, including excursions, and the

according to the students' interests.

Also, many surprises in the form of
unexpected and interesting acquaintances
and meetings await the participants of the

basis for new friendships and a better
understanding of Russia. Free time for
relaxation and recreation will also be
plentiful.
